The disease has also been discovered in Specialty Plants, Inc., San Marcos, CA. At least 11 other nurseries in southern California are presumed to be positive for the disease. The UDAF is requiring all Utah nurseries, plant stores and other retailers that sell the following list of plants and materials to hold the listed products. Because of Utahs climate, it is unlikely that many of the products would have been shipped to the state. The UDAF plans to survey wholesale and retail outlets to determine whether any of the products entered the state. The following are hereby declared to be hosts and possible carriers of Sudden Oak Death: Soil, humus, compost, and manure; Bigleaf maple, California buckeye, Madrone, Manzanita, Japanese camellia, Sasanqua camellia, Witch hazel, Toyon, Tanoak, California honeysuckle, Himalaya pieris, Pieris Forest flame, Pieris Brouwers Beauty, Japanese pieris, Douglas-fir- , Coast live oak, Canyon live oak, California black oak, Shreve oak, field. Accommodations for field assignments may be primitive by plant types Jerry Goodpseed, Utah State University Extension horticulturist As with humans, when a plant is sick, it looks miserable for a while, receives extra water, gets thrown some expensive granules, and is expected to get better. However, when the plant dies, we are surprised at its lack of stamina, then place a new one in the same spot. When that one dies, we scratch our heads and wonder why we have such poor luck with plants. As with humans, there are tests that can be run to help diagnose problems in the landscape. One that is very effective is a soil test. It is the first thing that should be done when problems persist in the landscape. The test analyzes essential components that may cause problems in the soil. It is also a good indicator gear. Mary Frothingham of Moab will coordinate the program in Grand County, and Carrie Nuoffer of Monticello will coordinate the program in San Juan County. For further information, please contact Frothingham at coffeeberry, Rhododendron, Coast redwood, Western California bay laurel Pepperwood, Oregon myrtle, Huckleberry, Bodnant viburnum, Mariesii, Doublefile viburnum Laurustinus. Special permits for shipping the above listed materials may be issued provided the product originates from areas known to be free of Sudden Oak Death disease, and that such areas have active survey programs in place to detect the presence of Sudden Oak Death disease. A phytosanitary certificate is required for each shipment from a quarantined area. The quarantine went into effect March 19, 2004 pursuant to the authority prescribed in Title 4, chapter 2, Section 2, Subsection (1) (k) and (ii), Utah Code and will remain in effective until rescinded. Any or all shipments or lots of quarantined articles or commodities listed above arriving in Utah in violation of this quarantine shall immediately be sent out of the state, destroyed, or treated by a method and in a manner as directed by the Commissioner of the Utah Department of Agriculture and Food or his agent. Treatment shall be performed at the expense of the owner, or owners or their duly authorized agent. star-flowe- of how to correct the problem. Here is what a soil test will show. Texture. The texture of soil is the percentage of sand, silt and clay. This indicates whether the soil is heavy in clay or has a high sand con- tent. Knowing the texture helps determine irrigation needs. It also makes a difference when it comes to select- ing plants and deciding which will grow well in an area and which will not. Lime. The lime content of soil is the percentage of carbonates. This is not a problem in northern Utah. We have more than enough lime, and it rarely poses a problem. It is not necessary to add lime to our soils. pH. The pH is a measurement of the acidity of the soil. The pH is a scale from 1 to 14, with 1 being extremely acidic Coming in April... Dstail-- H its easy at www.moabrealestate.com! Soil test results may be a little higher or lower than that. This information can help in choosing a more acidic fertilizer or other options when amending the soil. Salt. Some soils are high in salt, which can cause plants to be stunted, thin and susceptible to other problems. Salt levels that are too high do not allow the plants roots to absorb water properly. Not correcting the problem can lead to perennial problems and frustration. Phosphorus. Most soils in Utah have sufficient phosphorus, but occasionally they are slightly deficient.
