Suzanne and Jim Walker rode their motorcycles out of the Slickrock Trail late in the afternoon on a hot June day. They had handed out water several times, gave some directions, but hadnt encountered any major problems. Andrea, who was working the Slickrock booth that day, was waiting in the parking lot. You didnt happen to see two boys on bikes, one 12 years old, and the other 17? she asked. No, I dont think so, Jim said But we werent actually looking for them. Why? They left their group at 10:30 this morning. They were riding down Sand Flats Road to where they were going to go ride Slickrock, then go on to meet their group in Moab. Problem is, they havent been seen since. The rest of their group is getting pretty worried. Theyd be out of water since about noon, replied Andrea. Is there a search out for them? Jim asked. No, said Andrea, Not yet. Their parents are not here and no one has authorized the search and rescue yet. Well, Sue and I will go over the Slickrock trail once more, to be sure they arent there. Then, if a search is called, we will have that already covered, Jim decided. Sue and Jim went back over the trail. The already difficult trail was much harder when they had to constantly look to each side, but they knew that the worn out or injured people will often seek shelter from the hot sun by sitting under one of the large Pinions or Junipers. Once under the thick branches, they could be nearly impossible to spot. Despite searching as carefully as they could, Jim and Sue did not find the boys. Nor had anyone else on the trail seen them. Back at the booth, Jim told Andrea, Those boys arent on the trail. And if they were, they wouldnt be in trouble cause there are lots of bikes, Jeeps, hikers, and us they could get help from. They must be lost somewhere else. Andrea nodded. A search is being set up now. They checked side to side for tracks, abandoned bikes, or someone off the trail. As they approached the halfway point, from which there was no shorter way back, the sun dipped below the horizon. They stopped to get a drink, and found themselves marveling at one of the most stunning sunsets they had ever seen. You know, we went up that ledge back there a ways, . . . A June 5, 2004, wedding is planned at St. Francis Episcopal Church in Moab, Utah. Jim said. Sue nodded, still looking at the sunset. I hardly noticed it this time, she said with a smile, then frowned. Are we going to make it to the rim before its too dark to ride? she asked warily. Sure, said Jim, adding, Dont worry. The search team wouldnt leave us out here alone. They continued on toward the mountains, with the brilliant orange sunset behind them. Jim led the way, trying to remember enough of the trail to make up for the deepening dark. The headlight on his dirt bike didnt really help a lot. Finally, they reached the Porcupine Rim trailhead where they were met by the sheriff. The sheriffs first words were, We found them. The Moab Bike Patrol welcomes its newest patrol- Married . . . The LOCAL PICTURE FRAMING heading up here to organize. Bego is bringing the ATV, and Frank will be in charge. Okay, replied Jim, Well wait for them. When Frank drove up, Jim explained that, although the boys had planned to ride Slickrock, they were not there. This meant that they could be anywhere between their camp at the base of the La Sals and Slickrock. Frank asked if Sue and Jim could search the jeep trails that run from Porcupine Rim to Slickrock, between Sand Flats Road and Negro Bill Canyon. If the boys had decided to ride those trails rather than the main road, they could be lost, injured or broken down somewhere in there. Frank would have others looking higher up, along Porcupine Rim and up into the mountains. Jim and Sue exchanged a glance. Jim said, Weve been riding about four and a half hours, doing Slickrock twice. Its now 8:30, and its gonna get dark real soon. Not to mention, the last time we rode this trail, you crashed on that set of ledges and knocked the wind out of you, and we havent been back since. Do you want to try it? Sue didnt hesitate. She glanced at the sun and replied, tax relief is offered under Utahs Enterprise Zone program, coordinated by the Department of Community and Economic Development to help small andor disadvantaged areas, and will be administered through the state tax commission.
