Fighting grazing Monticello farmers and ranchers in San Juan Currently, County are facing a difficult battle. The Southern Utah Wilderness Alliance has filed legal action with the BLM to try and stop the renewal of grazing permits in that area. Without these resources, which have been available since the area was settled, livestock ranchers would be forced out of business. The San Juan Stockmans Assn, has been forced to enter the legal fray by hiring a law firm to represent their interests. The law firm of Cheyenne, Wyo., is the biggest name in public lands litigation. Recently, they were successful in defending ranchers in Carbon County from encroachment from outside interests. The Association is soliciting assistance by doing a membership drive. Roosevelt The Uintah Basin, as defined geologically, may hold a tremendous amount of natural gas; a vital commodity in short supply these days. Members of the Independent Petroleum Assn., met in Vernal to discuss the plusses and minuses of that potential. Mark Eckles, vice president for the Wind River Resources, a petroleum exploration company, explained that geologic features of the Uintah Basin are well suited for trapping natural. The Basin is deepest next to the south slope of the Uinta Mountains, he said. Wind, river, sea and lake deposits over eons of time have filled in this depression. Increasing pressure has turned these deposits into shales and standstones. However, Eckles noted, there are pockets of sand trapped in these rocks. They are ideal reservoirs for natural gas. At a recent public hearing, the County Commission voted to grant the companys request for a conditional use permit for the installation of a compressor station near Rasmussen Cave. The vote came after extensive efforts were made by the company to contact public officials and a move by the Nine Mile Coalition to question the need for the station at its proposed location.
