RTI, a Utah Valley-base- d company, has announced plans to open a manufacturing facility in Monticello. RTI projects that the company could have more than 150 employees in the Monticello area within a few years. RTI manufactures railroad ties using recycled plastic. The heavy-dutties are designed to withstand extreme conditions. Officials report that tests conducted on the ties by the railroad companies have come back with high marks. The company will begin manufacturing operations within a month in order to fill number of smaller orders. That process will take place at Young Machine until a permanent facility can be built. RTI states that it will offer many jobs that will pay nearly 150 7c of the local average wage. They mentioned a dedicated work force as a prime reason for their decision to locate in Monticello. San Juan Record Monticello y Development negotiations . . . Telluride, Colo. In response to a lengthy list of concerns from the Town of Telluride about the proposed Idarado Mining Co. plan to develop the east end of the valley, San Miguel County staff responded with an equally lengthy checklist of assurances. The very process established by the county to review Idarados proposed plan, which includes the reservation of 2,500 acres of high country land, and a gift of a small parcel of land to the county for affordable housing, has been noted by town officials as their foremost concern. Telluride Daily Planet Emergency funding . . . Price The Helper City Council is seeking a community development block grant for funds to improve the current water crisis. CDBG is a federal program administered by Utah Community and Economic Development. Debbie Hatt, a representative of the Southeastern Utah association of Government, tipped the council off to the existence of CDBG emergency funds. Normally, application deadlines for the CDBG are one year in advance. However, SEUAOLG has approved Helpers petition to apply for the grant funds early based on the citys emergency need for the money. Sun Advocate A major water grab? Cortez, Colo. Park City Most of the fish were dead, having suffocated last week when East Canyon Creek dried up. At 7:30 a.m. on Aug. 13, Snyderville Basin Water Reclamation District General Manager Michael Leurs said East Canyon Creek was dry upstream from the districts treatment plant near Jeremy Ranch. Over the past 30 days, flows in the stream have steadily decreased, he said. Mere puddlings were supporting a few fish Wednesday as other species in East Canyon Creek, in the Snyderville Basin, took their last breath. Water in the Leurs said, adding Snyderville Basin is that there is not enough water in western Summit County to support water rights allocated by the state. Over the years the Bureau of Reclamation has had engineers provide their estimates and even awarded contracts for the work. However, financial circumstances prevented the work from being done, until now. It cost too much money and other contracts were canceled, said Tom Bruon, Stillwater area manager for the Central Utah Water. The Bureau announced last week that a $5.6 million contract to of Colorado had been awarded, for the first part of a phased rehabilitation on the 32,000 acre-foreservoir. Whether of not Grantsville City population can 6,015 support four gas stationsconvenience stores is anyones guess. But one fact seems pretty certain: unless the City Council puts the kabosh on the plan, a Maverick Country Store will soon be part of the community. A representative of the company last week told the Planning and Zoning Commission that his company is in the process of buying 1.09 acres of land, where it plans to build a 3,000 sq. ft. gas station and convenience store. The plan met with some stiff opposition from other gas stationconvenience store owners and managers, as well as neighbors in the area. In the end, though, members voted unanimously to recommend rezoning of the land to the City Council. Tooele Tooele Transcript Bulletin |
