Show Hilltop Asm October 12, 2000 Scavengers defile Attic donations Sight project by Mary Galbraith Hilltop Times i staff The Airmans Attic on base provides household goods and clothing to base families who have trouble making ends meet. However those truly in need may not have access to basic items because of the inconsiderate actions of a handful of people. Goods dropped off after duty hours are being scavenged. There are many mornings staff arrives only - r to clean up donations that have been left in a disheveled i - heap by people sorting through donations before the Airmans Attic can inventory. Carole Beasley, Relocation Program manager, said when people rummage through donations, clothing and furniture is soiled because its left out in the open. She added donations left in plastic garbage bags have been ripped open, exposing the contents to the weather. As the weather cools off and snowy wet conditions move in, concern has grown. The center doesnt have access to laundry facilities. That means soiled items must be discarded altogether or placed on the shelves dirty. Beasley said to complicate matters, people are taking portions of household items rendering the goods unusable and forcing the center to haul remnants to the dump (cushions were stolen from a couch and a bed headboard and footboard were taken but the rails were left behind) . While Airmans Attic generally supports base military workers ranking staff sergeant and below, the Family Support Center staff said no one in need will be turned away. We have no problems with the people who want the items, said Liesel Woodard, Information Referral Manager at the Family Support Center. The items are free. If you need the stuff come in. What we need to do is inventory. If you have a need talk to us. Theres no reason to rummage through the items. Security Forces will also patrol the area to ensure its secured. The Family Support Center is requesting donations during duty hours when possible. Hours are: Monday, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday from 9 a.m. -- 3 p.m. and Tuesday from 1 - 7 p.m. Anyone who wants to donate large furniture items after duty hours or on weekends can make arrangements by calling Laura Hunsaker at Ext. People who donate during duty hours can also pick up tax deduction slips. Since the Airmans Attic opened at its new location in Bldg. 332 (next to the Post Office) about seven months ago, Beasley said over 2,600 people have used the facility to acquire clothing and household items. Included in those goods were 42 couches; 27 infant items (cribs, car seats and walkers); over a dozen washers, dryers, beds, tables and microwaves; and many other basic home items. The Airmans Attic is in need of clean useable items especially cold weather clothing as winter approaches. There is also a need for recycled grocery bags for patrons to place goods in. Photo by Senior Airman Russ Martin Bryce Roberts, from Boy Scout Troop 475, is collecting old prescription eyeglasses on base as an Eagle Scout project. The used eyeglasses will be cleaned, repaired and then turned over to the Gift of Sight Program which provides prescription glasses to those in need in developing countries. Collection boxes are available in Bldgs. 849, 100, 891, 225, 1235, 442 and the Hill Clinic. The eyeglasses will be collected during October.
