On Aug. 3 another significant milestone was reached as the first Minuteman III achieved strategic alert with an upgraded guidance system produced under the Guidance Replacement Program. This historic event took place at Malmstrom AFB, Mont, the base where the very first Minuteman missiles were put on alert for our nation's defense in cost-effecti- ve First Minuteman I test flight in 1961. 1962. 500 Minuteman III missiles now on The new guidance system, designed and produced by Boeing Electronic Systems & Missile Defense, replaces existing guidance system electronics that alert at Malmstrom AFB, Mont., Minot AFB N.D., F.E. Warren AFB, Wyo. are becoming unreliable due to normal aging. A total of 652 units are planned to be produced to support the 500 Minuteman III missiles now on alert. As a result, the Air Force will maintain weapon system reliability and supportability of the Minuteman fleet beyond the year 2020. The new guidance system has proven itself in two highly successful Minuteman III test flights from Vandenberg AFB, Calif., in 1998.
