Show June 3, 1 999 Hilltop Times with all the things Utah has to offer," said Ruiz. "What really helped us out a lot was getting in contact with Ko Hussain, an LM employee. We would either staff "Gone with the Wind," Clark Gable's character, Rhett Butler, helped heroine Scarlet O'Hara return to her plantation after the Civil War, where she prospered. Hill AFB's own Clark Gable is more "Moving Czar" than movie star, but he and other Family Support Center staff are teaming up with directorates to facilitate a smooth transfer of personnel coming in with the additional workloads awarded to Hill so they too prosper at their new base. Gable, Barbara Ferguson and Steve Rose are all "n talk on the phone or each other. He basically set up our hotel when we came on our house hunting trip and he got me in contact with a realtor. That really helped out tremendously because we had no idea who to talk to or where anything was so Ko took care of that for us." oving has been an adjustment, but Ruiz is enjoying Utah thanks to her successful head start. "We heard so many different stories. You know, 'there's nothing to do,' 'you're just stuck inside all E-m- ail . part of the Family Support Center relocation winter.' Everybody imagined it would be like a really small little town. People were telling us everything you're starting that job hundreds of miles from the place you call home a whole new set of concerns enters the equation as employees'adjust to new professional and personal surroundings. That's why the team is encouraging directorates to participate in a sponsorship program, ready to institute, so employees from other bases have a heads up on Hill and the surrounding area. They hope the program will emulate the successful military program extending to spouses and family members, resulting in personnel and families who feel welcome and adjust more easily. are held at directorates and the team for anyone interested Classes open invitation Classes are also available at the Family Support Center. The team says transfers are rough on any family but while military families may know where they'll be transferring up to a year ahead of time, civilians rarely receive more than two or three months advance notice so they have less time to research the new area on their own. Yvonne Ruiz transferred to the ICBM System Programs Division from Kelly AFB in San Antonio, Texas, about 14 months ago. Her husband wasn't able to find a job right away so he followed her here about six months later. Ruiz is enthusiastic about the sponsorship program. "Most people would be lost without having some type of contact with somebody that already lives up and you're not really familiar with the area you just try to think of things you might be interested in. The best way to sponsor someone is to put yourself in their shoes and imagine yourself coming to the area for the very first time and not knowing a thing about it." ussain has lived in Utah for six years. After a few years here he thought it would have been .nice if he received some of the information he's passed on to Ruiz. Compiling information has required minimal effort on his part and packets from M team. Starting a new job is always stressful but when JM WL "I've moved a bunch of times in my career and I know how traumatic a move can be. I've also sponsored people before in the military and so I had experience," he said. "Sponsoring someone is one of those things where all you want to do is make it a little easier for them. When you're going some place here. There's no way you can become familiar by Mary Galbraith closes at 9 o'clock. Some things are like that but there's so much to do . especially in winter. You've got the .skiing, snowmobiling and snowboarding. Plus in summer there's camping and hiking. Nobody really told us that beforehand. Everyone just imagined this small little town where nobody goes anywhere or does anything and it's not like that." aps were one of the most helpful items Ruiz received. She said people were telling her to buy homes in different cities and she had no idea where they were and how far they were from the base. Hussain also helped chauffeur Ruiz around. Several inches of snow greeted her upon arrival and the taxi service was much appreciated. Ruiz didn't have a lot of experience moving household good so Hussain stepped in helping direct movers. The crew began calling him "Mr. Ruiz" because he was so helpful they thought he must be her husband. It's become the office joke but also ' sums up the extra effort he put in making her feel comfortable and ensuring a successful move. While her transfer has still been a difficult period she's positive about the move and the area, in part, because of a dedicated sponsor. Hussain has been involved in sponsorship programs before and knows first hand how difficult Mi moving can be. the Family. Support Center outline a sponsor's responsibilities. Hussain says efforts on his part are rewarded because he knows he's helping someone newa'djust and he hopes new arrivals take full advantage of the program. "Make maximum use of your sponsor and don't hesitate to use them or call them if you have any questions that could possibly make your transition smoother because they're there to help you and they don't mind," said Hussain. "It's a good way to start the whole working relationship. It makes them more comfortable and more at ease and gives them a point of contact where they can go to see how things work." Denis Carlos, who helped initiate the program in the ICBM Directorate, said, "I think it's very important. People are scared when they move to a new base. They feel like they're losing their roots. Having a good sponsor really does make the difference. If you just walk into a brand new place you don't feel welcome. Having someone show you around helps you feel like you're going to fit in. If I was going somewhere I would want someone to say welcome aboard." The program helped the LM organization immensely.
