FOR ANNOUNCER: (i.e. Officers, how many years, awards won, Sergeant at Arms, Drill Master, etc.) Return to Steven White at the Grand County Sheriffs Office by June In order for me to be more effective in the legislature and push our rural agenda, I feel it is very important for the members of the legislature to understand our circumstances. Our problems are very different from the urban areas most legislators represent, and it is easy for us to get overlooked. One of my major goals has been to get legislators to come 9. i a gatedTentry iv.'A il Hilltop Condos 2 in the Country down to our district to spend some time getting familiar with our needs. As I reported a couple of weeks ago, I have been pursuing having the legislature come to Southeastern Utah this year for their summer interim session. The Legislative Management Committee has reached a decision about the location of this years session. There's good news and bad news. The bad news is - we lost our bid to host the legislature this summer to Cache County. Although we had a lot of support with House leadership, the Senate wanted to go North this summer. There is some sentiment that since the legislature traveled South last year, they should go North this year. Anyway, the good news is we have two commitments from leadership. The first is a promise the legislature will come to Southeastern Utah next summer. The second is that House Leadership and the Committee for State and Local Affairs will hold meetings here this summer. This plan might work to our advantage. We will have visits from policymakers in the legislature for two years instead of one. This will also give us a full year to carefully plan an agenda for the entire group. I not only feel it is important to have groups of legislators come to our area, but also have encouraged individual legislators to core Last week the Chairman of the Geneiai Government and Capital Facilities Appropriations Committee (the committee that ar proves all state buildings), Representative Mont Evans traveled from Salt Lake to ROCK SPRINGS VISTA DEVELOPMENT CO. The more exposure we have with those who direct State services and control the State purse strings, the more control and opportunity we will have in Southeastern Utah. While we aren't going to be able to have the whole group this summer, I'll be working to articulate our issues and get key legislators to leam first hand about our needs. We can all get geared up to do a super job of hosting the legislature a year from now.
