Pat Cook, right and Rosalie Goldman Bluff, Utah, were honored Salt in Lake City by the Freedoms Wednesday, November 10, Foundation at Valley Forge. At a Utah chapter luncheon attended by Governor Leavitt, they received a combined award, as chairman for establishing the first public library on its own and site in the southern end of San Juan County, Utah. With nine others, they were praised for achievements towards a better world. "Each award is a great honor," said M. Alma Welch, Valley Forge Foundation board member. "These eleven honorees were selected from over 1,000 names submitted unbeknownst to them." In 1949, President Eisenhower was one of the founders of the Valley Forge Foundation to promote good citizenship by recognizing annually service to the community, scholarship, and heroic action. With chapters in each state, candidates' names are pooled at the Valley Forge main office in Pennsylvania, where final selections are made by a national committee. Among other awardees this year are Joe Cannon for his support of the Holocaust Museum in Washington, D.C., Karen Hahne for work involving Downe's Syndrome and Dallin Oaks, former president of BYU, for a Florida speech on peace. Cook and Goldman worked voluntarily for three and a half years to achieve the Bluff Librarys opening in April 1992. Its site is the old, condemned Bluff jail, which they renovated with donated labor and materials. A fine collection of books has been contributed from all over the U.S. The Bluff Library also serves as the Visitor and Cultural Center in Bluff. 21-2- December 3 December 4 Crime Prevention, many people in today's society view violence as a way to deal with strong emotions, resolve conflicts and gain power. The increase of violence and crime in Utah's schools and neighborhoods is epidemic, and it reflects the influence of entertainment, in all its forms, which is inundated with violence. The Utah Council for Prime Prevention has joined with the Utah PTA to launch a campaign to "Turn Off The Violence" during Utah Family Week. Governor Leavitt, in a public service message supporting Utah Family Week and "Turn Off The Violence," is encouraging families to be more responsible about exposing their children to excessive violence and asking people to reduce the amount of graphic, violent entertainment coming into the home. According to Mrs. Milne, by the time children reach teen years, they have seen 200,000 acts of violence on TV alone, including 18,000 simulated murders. This figure does not include violence or murders seen in movies, videos or video games. Research has shown that viewing repeated violence has a marked effect on the attitudes of young people about violent acts. "If entertainment media can sell products and change the market place through advertising," Milne said, "think what it's doing to our attitudes concerning violence. "It is time to make violence in entertainment less profitable, and people can do that by making it less popular," she said. "One thing everyone can do is tum it off! This is not censorship, it is free choice. We are not suggesting that people stop going to movies or watching TV, what we're suggesting is that people be more responsible in choosing what they watch so that we start sending new messages to those who Fund Raiser Sarah White's 3rd hour Quest class put on a Service Project to raise money for Seekhaven on Saturday November 13.
