At their regular meeting Monday, County Commissioners heard a request from campground owner Dick Holladay to pass an ordinance giving the Sheriffs department authority to enforce health standards throughout the county. Holladay and other campground owners have been critical of the Bureau of Land Management's efforts to clean up the Colorado River corridor, and have proposed a complete ban on all public lands camping within 15 miles of Moab. According to Holladay, District Sanitarian Jim Adamson has directed the federal agency to clean up unsanitary conditions and fire dangers along the River Road near milepost 1, but the BLM has not done so. Holladay said Adamson has been in contact with the State Attorney General's office to determine his authority over health questions on public lands. Commissioners indicated concern about the possible dangers to residents using the area, and showed a willingness to pursue the request for an ordinance. "To me, that's what we need," said Commissioner Feme Mullen. "In my opinion," Commissioner David agreed Knutson, "there's a real problem there. My concern is the health and safety of residents and visitors." The commissioners agreed to meet with Adamson in the. near future to determine what actions to take. The commission also heard a report from Georgia Hamblin representing the Southeastern Utah Public Health Board. She said the health district faces major budget shortfalls in the coming year, and that Grand County is required to help finance the district "We are not paying our way as a county," said Hamblin, "and that bothers me." She added that the health board will be approaching the county with a request for more funding during the budget process this autumn.
