"This was necessary to meet the extra demand created by the Does the film industry really contribute to local economic and community development? This is a question frequently posed to members of the Moab Film Commission. "It's hard to understand how anyone could even question the situation," said Karl Tangren, MFC's financial and public relations officer. production crew for Thelma and Louise," she noted. Swasey recently conducted an economic development survey for the Grand County Economic and Community Development Office requiring interviews with 50 local businesses. This gave her the opportunity to ask the businesses if they felt any financial impact from the recent film activity. "Almost all of the people I interviewed said they had received some benefit, direct or indirectly. Most of "We see thousands of film production dollars pouring into the community all year long. Film companies provide jobs and contract services; the crew members buy from our stores and gift shops, rent lodging and eat in our restaurants," Tangren continued. "During the production of 'Thelma and Louise' the company made road improvements on the Shafer Trail, a popular jeep and bike road. Numerous improvements were made on private property, such as upgrading electrical and neon systems, painting and cabinet work. Tangren pointed out that these improvements were in addition to what people were paid for their property being used as a movie set. He also noted that one crew person even bought a home in Moab while he was here. MFCs 1990 fund raising drive will be getting under way this week and Tangren will be heading up the effort. MFC has developed a new public information brochure that details how the Moab Film Commission is operated and financed. All persons contacted for local support will receive a brochure. According to Robbie Swasey, MFC president, there were a number of local businesses that had to put the businesses indicated that it looked like 1990 was going to be one of the best years they had had in a long time," Swasey said. Jim Kelly, who worked as assistant location manager, compiled a list of over 100 businesses who benefited directly from work with the Ridley Scott production. "This was only what I could keep track of in my department. I'm sure there are more who did business with the transportation department, art department, and others of which I am not aware," Kelly reported. Each local company or agency that contracted with the film company had two to six people working on set. This included such service as re- covery and reclamation, police assistance, ambulance service, towing service, and landscaping. This was in addition to the 36 actors and extras, and the 31 crew people hired for the production. "Another quarter of a million dollars per diem was spent by the (outside) crew in local gift shops, on recreation, or for miscellaneous sundries, while they made Moab their temporary home, Stanton continued. "The production accountant for Thelma and Louise estimated that the company dropped over $3 million in southeastern Utah while making the movie." "When we report how many dollars a film company drops in southeastern Utah, we are talking only the dollars left here," Stanton clarified. "We do not include such costs as outside crew salaries, a helicopter rented from Provo, or car rentals from Grand Junction. We include only what we can trace that was 259-719- 1 goods and services." Stanton expressed frustration over the public apathy regarding the film industry's economic impact on the local communities. "There are few local businesses that will turn over as many dollars in a year as a film company does in a month while making a single major feature," Stanton said, "and this is all new cash flow into the area." President Swasey concluded, "The good news is that a lot of people were able to pay off old overdue bills folks made and some the them tide to through enough winter." out-of-wo- rk Blackburn Podiatry - Foot Specialist Moab Medical Center Oct. 2 1 for appointment Call 259-7T2- s fr:i 11 .61 M J Fund raising underway . . . In the September meeting of the Moab Film Commission Sheri Griffith, of Griffith Production Services, expressed appreciation for the good work MFC is doing to bring more film activity to southeastern Utah. She made a sizeable donation to blast off the 1990 MFC fund raising campaign. MFC President Robbie Swasey congratulated the Griffiths on their new business and its expansion. One of the MFC goals is to encourage the development of film production support businesses in southeastern Utah. Ron Griffith, who heads up Griffith Production Services, recently expanded his and added a camera truck and motor home to grip truck to a their production support fleet. "This type of local business helps MFC when competing for film projects with other areas," Swasey said. "We also encourage career development in the film industry for the same purpose. The more the film companies can acquire locally, the easier it is on their budget," she explained. 0. Raised Relief Maps Moab area Times-Independe- " 2-t- 5-t- on Republicans Come to our Fund.
