The oldest known mass extinction occurred 650 million years ago, eliminating many kinds of single-celle- d algae. The greatest extinction in the past was recorded in rocks about 250 million years ago when as much as ninety percent of all species perished. Another major episode of extinction happened only 10,000 years ago when mammoths, horses, camels, presented by Dr. Eaton on "The History of Extinction," in conjunction with the Grand Opening of the exhibit, June 1 at 7:30 p.m. in the Commission Chamber at the County Courthouse. It will be followed with a reception and open ground sloths, tapirs, and saber and admission to the Museum is toothed cats disappeared from North America. An upcoming exhibit at the Dan O'Laurie Museum, "The History of Extinction" will examine the history, proposed causes, and nature .of extinction's. It is curated by Dr. Jeff Eaton, Assistant Curator of Paleontology at the Museum of Northern free, although donations are appreciated. Summer hours at the Museum are 1 to 5 and 7 to 9 p.m., Monday through Saturday. The Dan O'Laurie Museum is located at 118 E. Center Arizona, in Flagstaff, and guest curators Gwen Waring and Larry Stevens. Gwen and Larry have both recently received their PhDs in zoology from Northern Arizona University. Gwen is currently a Research Associate at the Museum of Northern Arizona, and Larry works for the National Park Service. This group has put together an exhibit which combines information from the geologic record with the perspective of modem biology. Besides examining the record of past extinctions, the exhibit also considers the impact of mankind on extinction rates today. This is presented in terms of both the global perspective and the rare and endan- gered species of our immediate vicinity, the Colorado Plateau. The current rate of extinction, at least 1000 species a year, will be compared to the great extinctions of the past and the question will be raised "Is this the final episode in the history of life." The exhibit opens June 1 and will run through July 31, 1990. There will be a series of three lectures during the exhibit. The first will be house at the museum. On June 15, Gwen Waring will present an evening of music and dis- cussion of "Evolution Today." Harley Armstrong, Curator of Paleontology at the Museum of Western Colorado in Grand Junction, Colorado, will speak on "Dinosaurs of the Colorado Plateau" July 13. There is no charge for the lectures, Street, injdoab.
