Show I The ,25$i Cal Black seeks to stay on commission San Juan County Commissioner Calvin Black has announced that he will run for for the four year term. He said he has been encouraged to run for Congress in the new Con- gressional District and that he has seriously considered doing so, but the final decision had to come down not only to what he would like to do and where he would like to live, but to where the most influence could be exerted for the good of San Juan and the other southern Utah Counties and their people. Because of his years of service and willingness to spend the time and his interest, he has been selected to serve on many national, state, and regional boards, committees and commissions that have a great deal to do with present and future policies that affect San Juan and other western counties. These positions include being a Board member of the National Association of Counties, (NACo) Chairman of the Energy and Environment Committee of NACo, a Board member of State Wilderness Committee, the Governors Advisory Council, the Four County Association of Local Governments, and the Joint County-Cit- y Roads Committee. Commissioner Black said if he leaves county Government, only two of the above positions wouid be held by another commissioner from San Juan County, and few if any would be held by another commissioner from Southern Utah or even from the state. All of these organizations have, both now and in the future, significant impact on legislation, rules and regula- the Western Counties Association,' a member of the o National Liason Committee representing Utah. Cal Black said in conclusion that he would rather stay in San Juan County and continue to represent the people and interests as a County Commissioner than to run for a lower office such as a Congressman and move to Washington. Construction is underway on the third unit. It will begin commercial operation in the spring of 1983. Recent estimates have placed the combined costs of the third and fourth units at some $836 million. The units generate about 400,000 kilowatts. All are fired by coal from nearby mines. Mr. Blundell noted that the companys record of building generating units in three years or less is one of the most enviable construction records in the electric utility industry. For the most part, similar-size- construc- d tion projects take four years to complete. The deferral will cause some reduction in the project work force as the third unit ia completed and the build-u- p for construction of the fourth unit is extended. A nswers .
