According to Gene Nodine, Moab ,The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) has applied to the Moab District, Bureau of Land Management (BLM) for permits to do exploratory work (i.e., drilling, seismograph, trenching) in association with DOEs nationwide program to select suitable sites for disposal of high level nuclear waste. Utah is one of several states in which studies are being conducted by DOE to identify potential sites for underground nuclear waste repositories. A complete listing of permit applications for exploratory work can be found in a DOE briefing document that was distributed at public briefings held by DOE at BLMs request on September 3 and 4, 1980. Copies of the briefing document are available from DOE and can be found in many public lib raries throughout Utah. The public expressed concerns at these meetings that exploratory actions have been and are being considered individually, and that the cumulative impacts from those actions are not being considered. In response to these concerns BLM and DOE have reviewed all past and proposed exploratory actions to determine the scope of cumulative impacts resulting from these actions. This comprehensive document outlines all past and pro- posed exploratory actions and their cumulative effects. Comments of the Draft EA will be most effective if they address the impacts from actions does not mean that approval of a repository site would necessarily follow.
