Pres.-automat- chairman, Ken Curtis, announced that the annual auction is scheduled for Saturday, May 16, 1987. - ' Drive ic; RadioTV auction committee this year's program. Initially contestants were given a written test covering all stages of government, local to national. The next step was a trip to Salt Lake City to meet both U.S. Senators from Utah. Next was an oral examination covering world problems as they relate to the United States. A priority to becoming an entrant was based on high school leadership. . While in Washington, D.C. the participants were taken on a bus tour of the city, but spent most of their time with political figures studying problems. They met most congressional leaders, but the President was not available due to temporary illness. One of the bigger issues of interest in Congress was voter awareness. It was reported that only 40 percent of registered voters voted during the last national election. Another item of importance being considered was social security concerning which it was stated, that by the year 2000 will represent about 60 percent of government expense. There seemed to be much buck passing between political parties. Still1 of importance was the -military budget wherein students were 'told the U.S. expends 6 percent of its gross national product as compared with Russia at 16 percent. Some contended that it may be too late for the U.S. to catch up. It was noted that we are now in both a missile and naval race. Some members of the congress believe that negotiation offers a solution to the problem. Regarding the economy, it was felt that farm economy takes precedence over all other economic problems. Highway speed limits came under scrutiny, with the west with wide open spaces seeking a raise in limits while the east does not favor any change. Some states consider federal control over speed limits a form of blackmail.
