APPASSED AND PROVED by a majority of the City Council this 20th day of charging on many items! The From the Moab Fire Department One of every nine Americans today is over 65 years of age. And the population over 65 is expected to double in the next 25 years. Americans over 75 are more than twice as likely to die in fire than the rest of the population. Once a person reaches the age of 90, the risk is four times greater than the average. And the magnitude of the problem can be expected to worsen as more Americans live longer lives. When older people are injured by fire, they are more likely to die from their bums. For one reason, they are more susceptible to bum injuries, smoke and toxic gases; second, they find it more difficult to escape fire safely; third, they have more trouble recovering from injuries. Many of the fires that kill our elderly were of fires not big fires. About one-fift- h involving people over 65 were confined to the room they started in, yet the victims were not able to . v ;u V y r escape. t Eighty percent of fire deaths among older Americans result from these common problems; careless use and disposal of smoking materials top the list of causes, with ft electrical wiring and portable heaters the next most common causes. So what can you do? If you are older than 65, take special precautions. If you have loved ones in this age group, help them become e. The Moab Fire Dept, more suggests these precautions. Great care must be taken with cigarettes, pipes, cigars, matches and lighters. Smoking should be done in safe places, not necessarily comfortable ones. In a comfy chair, sofa or bed it is too easy to drift off to sleep, letting the burning cigarette drop onto the upholstery or your clothing. Or a dropped match can be lost in furniture cushions, giving off poisonous smoke as it smolders unnoticed. Ash trays should be designed so they do not tip easily and should be large enough to hold the entire cigarette or cigar. In an ashtray that only allows a small part of the cigarette to rest inside, the cigarette can fall and start an undetected fire. Overloading electrical circuits can be avoided easily. Do not plug more electrical items into an outlet than it was designed for. Use extension cords sparingly and carefully. Have wiring in older homes inspected for safety by a professional. fire-saf- 2ft & a 5 ,, Portable heaters demand extra caution. Be sure yours has a UL tag indicating it was tested for safety by Underwriters Laboratories. Also be sure it has a safety switch that turns it off automatically if it tips over. Keep it at least three feet away from anything that might bum, like curtains, furniture, clothing, bedding and the like. Never use an extension cord with a portable heater. Always turn it off before you go out or go to sleep. Besides these risks, older people of account for more than one-thir-d all deaths from cooking fires and altogether too many scald bums. So be careful in the kitchen. Wear close-fittin- g clothing, not flowing robes or billowy sleeves. Keep pot handles turned toward the wall and appliance cords up on the counter out of the way. Never leave cooking & 5 food unattended, even for a moment. If a grease fire erupts, smother it quickly and carefully with the pans lid or by placing a larger pan on top. And have your household hot water set at no more than 125 degrees. Hotter water is no healthier and can cause a third worst kind in less degree bum-t- he than two seconds. If you dont already have them, have smoke detectors installed, even if you rent your home or apartment. They cost very little and can save your life in a fire. The detectors will smell smoke for you and wake you up so you can escape before toxic gases bring death as you sleep. If you need help putting your detector up, ask a friend or relative, or call the fire department for help. Work meeting held by sorority Members of Green Rivers Beta Zeta Chapter of Epsilon Sigma Alpha met on January 19th at the home of JoAnn Wetherington for their January socil meeting. The meeting was used as a work meeting making favors for the State Convention which the chapter will be hosting on May 29, 30 and 31, 1987 at the Radisson Inn in Price, Utah.
