Editor's note: The name of she Provo Church of God hat been changed; as of Wednesday, it is now called the Utah Valley Church of God. By REV. PAUL J. BRANTLEY Utah Valley Church of God Our hves arc compounded continually by all the unfortunate realities; that grip us in this modem age. To add to this barrage of emptiness is the weariness that we are consumed by. My secular job enables me to witness a steady stream of weary, unhappy, downtrodden souk; so few are those with smiles and positive attitudes. This has caused me to ask, "What is the proWemT Many have troubles and situations that overw helm them. Let's facie it, living today isn't the carefree lifestyle of yestery ear. Financial struggles, health problems, family turmoil, job security, spiritual fulfillment these are touching our lives all the time. To complicate this ev;n c, many are taught that they are to bfcar their burdens and go on. Some churches go as far as to stress that their members apply theold adage, "Grin and bear it" Smile and look happy. Never let anyone know of the pain and heartache you are enduring. Can this be the true intention of God? Is there hope in this day and age? When we turn to scripture, many are the ways that God has provided rest for the weary. He has, assured us rest in his son, Jesus Christ. Jesus stated in Matthew :28, "Come unto me all ye that labor and are heavy laden and I will give you rest." He continues in verse 29, stressing that again we find "rest unto oupsouls." We need to be knowledgeable of the fact that he has taken on our infirmities and bears our sicknesses (Matthew 8:17). God instructs us, in Galatians 6:2, that we are to "bear one another's burdens." Jesus told us to live the example that he has show n us. His example was one of love, care, support and compassion. The compassion of Jesus is described as "suffering with another in love." Matthew 9:36 demonstrates the compassion Jesus felt for the neglected multitudes. We witness one of many times ho showed concern in the sorrow f the widow in Luke 7: 13. His parable of the Good Samaritan in Luke 10:33 strikes a blow to any denominational prejudice. And love and care for our family should never waver, as shown in the story of the prodigal son in Luke 15:20. Many politicians are trying to sell us on their platforms of concern. God has his own platform which states, "1 have saved that the saved may save. I have loved that the loved may love. I have reached that the reached may reach." It is time we set ourselves to the mission of loving one another and bearing one another's burdens. Loving others as you love yourself should never go out of style. Let us be of the righteous that God might say of us, "When I was an hungered, ye gave me meat; I was thirsty and ye gave me drink; a stranger and you took me in; naked and ye clothed me; sick and ye visited me; in prison and yc came unto me." "With the compassionate support of'each other and the assurance of Jestis Christ, we tix can speak the words of Apostle Paul from 2 "We arc trouCorinthians 4:8-bled on every side, yet not distressed; we are perplexed, but not ill despair; persecuted, but not forsaken; cast down, but not destroyed."
