"Employers were just beginning to look at child care in the work place." Fried said. Three ears later. Fried joined the Association of Child Care Consultants, a newly formed organization to answer the professional needs of a brand new specialty, one created by the demands of business to deal w ith child care. In addition to child care, in 1990. the firm of Fried & Sher. Inc.. began to focus on other work and family matters that concern businesses nationwide, such as elder care, flexible hours, job sharbenefits, altering, family-friendl- y native work schedules and counseling and seminars for employees to assist them in handling family responsibilities. "Our firm evolved as employers began to realize that child care is only one piece of the worklife agenda, that (here are other issues that impact on our abilities to work and to be productive," said Fried, whose firm now has eight employees and currently is working on projects for 20 different companies. Among her clients are federal agencies such as the Department of Transportation, the Central Intelligence Agency, the General Services Administration and the Air Force. Today. Mary Ellen Gornick is president of Corporate Parenting Associates in Des Plaines, 111., a human resource consulting firm founded in 1984 that specializes in work and family. A former senior level manager in state government and private business. Gornick has a master's degree in social service administration from the University of Chicago and is president of the Association of WorkLife Professionals. "We absolutely are an emerging profession," she said. "We've moved away from just child care and now look at broader issues of how individuals manage their work lives and home lives and how employers retain valued employees." Though professional standards still are forming for the specialty. Gornick says when she hires she looks for someone who has "a strong background in research, sensitivity to psychological issues, is flexible, a team player and knows human development and business."
