High schools throughout Utah have been involved in concurrent enrollment programs for many years now, but in more recent years, these programs are becoming a more common implement to a student's success. ''Concurrent enrollment can be a very confused term," said Bruce mm Evans, the coordinator over the program at Provo High. Tt is confusing because there are three different areas in the concurrent enrollment program at Provo High." The first area is the adjunct faculty. This is where a college instructor comes to a high school to teach a certain course to students for college credit. Another area is the distance learning program This type of learning is done by students staying in a high school classroom, but interactively speaking to the instructor by television. Provo High has its program set up with two televisions, a camera, and five microphones. All high school students trying to gain credit from Utah Valley State College must first pass a test before being admitted to this program. "The concurrent enrollment class promotes preparation for the future. When a student graduates from high school they should be able to leave with a marketable skill. With an early start on college or even a degree, this kind of program can be a valuable implement for the future." commented Evans. Many of these instructors take the initiative to get to know students by visiting the classroom in person," said Evans. The final area of concurrent enrollment programs offered to students is a release from class to attend classes on the college campus. Last year Provo High began paying full tuition costs for those students who were involved in a concurrent program. The only fee that high school students must pay is the $20 application and textbook fees. It is estimated that Provo High spends nearly $100,000 a year in tuition for about 300 students involved in the program.
