'At the core of the drama is Percy! the prisoner, who upon her release, tries to find peace in Gilead, a small Maine village she hopes will provide the balm she needs for a bruised soul. She finds work and shelter at the Spitfire Cafe, owned by a woman as flinty as; the harsh and unyielding climate that surrounds them. Percy, played with uncompromising honesty by Alison Elliot, defines herself as "white trash," and, although she may have grown up in poverty and deprivation, fflryrTjh vy:1 I It is not surprising, however, that d townsfolk with little else to do are quick to judge the newcomer and threaten her attempts to build a new life. But she finds unexpected friendship, not only from Spitfire owner Hannah, whom she sees as a surrogate mother figure, but from Hannah's niece-in-laShelby.. These three women are strong and wonderful. Veteran actress Ellen Burstyn gives Hannah layers of depth, showing her not only as a tough New Englander, but also as a woman who nurtures deep sorrow and longing. Her character want's to sell the Spitfire, not because she is interested in retirement income, but because she shelters a dwindling hope that she can reclaim something she loved and lost more than a decade earlier. Marcia Gay Harden as Shelby plays a meek and compliant wife who befriends Percy and blooms under Percy's example. Her newfound strength threatens her jealous and insecure husband as she discovers her own worth. The trio grows close, particularly after Percy suggests a plan to sell the Spitfire using an essay contest with a $100 entry fee ' If if lUNDAIICE 24-hou- - ..
