Show Page D4 - THK DAILY IU RAI.I), Provo, Utah, Tuesday, December 5, 1995 Mm By DARNELL DICKSON Special to The Daily Herald receiver-quarterbac- Now that the season is over, it is; time to look back on the Utah County prep 1'ootbaM season and give credit where it is due. I didn't see every game, but I went to a game every week and saw most of the teams and players. If a good player had a bad game when I saw him play, I still read the game articles the following week. These awards are just for fun and if I left anyone out, it wasn't on purpose. ; GOLDEN ARM AWARD (Best Quarterback) Garrett Johnson of Spanish Fork just kept getting better as the season went along and led one of the most dangerous offenses in the state, throwing for 1,700 yards, and 15 touchdowns. American Fork's Isaac Kelley threw for 244 yards and four touchdow ns in his' first start this year and I was impressed. He has the size, arm strength, touch and smarts to play at the next level. He threw for nearly 1,500 yards and 16 touchdowns in only eight games and had only six interceptions. More importantly, the Cavemen tied ; with Brighton for the Region 4 championship. And he's only a junior. But the GOLDEN ARM AWARD goes to Timpview's Bret Engemann. He was a preseason and threw w k ith the best of them. for 1,979 yards and 20 touchdow ns in leading the Thunderbirds to a Region 8 title. Engemann is considered the best college prospect in Utah, acawding to sources, and as a third-yestarter was a leader on his team. ar STICKY FINGERS AWARD There were a (Best Receiver) lot of good receivers around this season and special mention has to go to Hunter's Cory Grow, who caught six passes for 249 yards and a touchdown against American Fork and may be the best receiver in the state. Mountain View's Craig Cardon was one of the most exciting players in Utah County this season, while Damon MacArthur of Springville averaged seven catches per game and probably had the surest hands of anybody around. Honorable mention also goes to Spanish Fork's Josh Andrew s (45 catches for 715 yards and eight touchdowns), w ho was part of the Dons' great season. Teammate Chris Anderson averaged a whopping 25 yards per catch on 29 receptions, timpview tight end Tyler Okey caught 41 balls for 647 yards and scored eight touchdowns and made a lot of bis: plays for the But this year's CRAZY LEGS AWARD winner is unquestionably Pleasant Grove's Rocky Smart. He rushed for 1,158 yards, scored !8 touchdowns, kicked two field goals and two extra points and scored a conversion. His 19 total points were nearly twice as many as his nearest Utah County foe. Not the biggest guy at and 175 pounds, he brought what he had every game as hard as he two-poi- nt 1 5-- could. Springville; Jeff Filimoehala, Lehi; Cheyenne Fish, Spanish Fork; Kiv Uluave, Provo. THE "HIT MAN" AWARD Moun(Best Defensive Player) tain View's Ifo Pili, at 4 and 280 pounds, commanded a lot of respect and Jon Scorsby of American Fork is an outstanding linebacker. The Cavemen's Ryan Slater is a real gem at defensive back, as is Orem's Jason Gonzalez. Rocky Smart of Pleasant Grove also deserves mention. But this year's HIT MAN AWARD goes to Springville's usually take a while to warm up, but when the Mountain View crowd gets going, the place really Raiders, Herring chose to honor his religious convictions and pass up the NFL. "DAN VS DAVE" AWARD American Fork's (Best Athlete) Jon Scorsby is 6-205 pounds and runs a 4.5 dash, which has college scouts drooling. He vvasn't even the starter at the beginning of the year, but replaced an injured Kory Hooker against Cottonwood and rushed for 102 yards. But even that didn't foreshadow his 300-yar- d performance against Provo, the biggest rushing effort in years. ar coach Everett Kelepolo got his team believing in itself and propelled his squad all the way to the state 4A semifinals. MOST EXCITING PLAY Mountain View was stinking up the field against Alta in a game that would determine a state playoff Then the spot and trailed 10-Bruins' Craig Cardon took a punt and streaked 80 yards for a touchdown, snapping Mountain View out of its haze and getting the crowd into the game. The Bruins won 25-2- 2 and if Hillcrest had lost to Brighton they would have had a plavoff came. 0. o) tickets BIGGEST DISAPPOINTMENT Later that same night, Hillcrest upset Brighton in double overtime, knocking Mountain View from plavoff contention. On a crossing route, the Brig McHenry looked for the ball, but instead was introduced to dreamland by Springville's Mark Moves. The sound of that hit is probably still bouncing around the Wasatch Front. BEST TEAM Timpview was undefeated in Region 8 play, but American Fork was the best team in Utah County this season. Defensively, they would bend but not break and the Cav emen had an offensive attack that could score from anywhere on the field. A.F.'s skill position players may be the best in the state. But the STICKY FINGERS honor this season goes to two the American Fork plavers tandem of Toby Christensen and Rvan Slater, both only juniors.
