Our toilet tank doesn't fill up far enouah to flush properly. I have to pour in buckets of water to get it to flush. How can I fix this? A. The amount of water that cnters the toilet tank is determined bv the action of the inlet valve or ball cock, which is located at the left side of the tank above the Aater-inl- line. If the valve closes et too soon and shuts off incoming water, the tank will not fill com- pletely. If the valve does not shut off when it should, the tank will overfill, point at which the inlet shuts off the water is deter- mined by a float that is attached to the valve. In older toilets, the float generally a large copper ball to a long rod. Move the fioat up to let more water into the tank. If adjusting the float to the prop-salv- e er level does not help, the sluggish flushing might not be caused" by the tank's water level. For exam-i- s pie, there may be a partial age in the toilet drain, or a buildup - block-attach- of minerals in the bowl's water outlets could be slowing the flow of water. Q. I have some teak dining-roochairs that have some small nicks and scratches. How can I fix these? A. Minor scratches and nicks in furniture can often be made almost invisible by wiping over them witli a "scratch cover" or oil stain that matches the color of the furniture. Scratch covers such as Old English are sold at some home centers and hardware stores in several shades, or you can probably find a pigmented oil stain that closely matches the color of the furniture. Special felt-ti- p pens to treat scratches are also available. Test the scratch cover or stain on an inconspicuous part of the furniture that has the same finish as the scratched area. A masonry sealer can help prevent dusting of the concrete, surface chipping or spalling, and help protect against chemical spills and stains. Sealers are sold at many home centers and building-suppl- y outlets. Choose the sealer carefully and read the directions thoroughly. Be warned thai some sealers can make concrete surfaces slippery when wet, especially if the sealer is overapplied. Q. We have a new deck, constructed with treated lumber. Some people tell us to be sure and seal it every year, others say to do nothing.
