By The Associated Press Remnants of Hurricane Opal scattered more rain along the East Coast early today. Atlanta was foggy before daybreak, and Southwest skies were mostly sunny. Northern New England was in line for rain today, the heaviest in Maine with wind gusts adding to the chill. Warm temperatures will prevail lower down the East Coast, with winds possible east of the central Appalachians. But a scattering of rain showers and thunderstorms, a few severe, was possible from the Florida peninsula and eastern panhandle stretching into the region. Rainfall amounts up to 2 inches were forecast in eastern North Carolina and southwest Virginia, and from the Great Lakes region east toward New England. Areas of cool, cloudy weather 30-m- Mid-Atlant- ic East; Southwest sunny in and rain were possible from the northeast Plains and portions of the Great Lakes region, with some thunderstorms likely in Indiana and Michigan. A Pacific storm system will produce wind gusts and stormy weather across the Northwest and into the Northern Rockies. The Southwest forecast called for dry conditions and mostly seasonable temperatures. Mostly sunny skies were forecast from Texas across the lower Rockies and into the interior West night in shelters, after Hurricane Opal slammed into the Panhandle a day earlier. Its storm surge caused an estimated $1 .8 billion in property damage. At West Point. Va., on Thursday, a tornado destroyed two airplanes and ripped the roof off an airport hangar. 15-fo- ot The rain fell on the just and unjust alike Thursday, but the just, who were out in force for the papal Mass at Giants Stadium, laughed it off even the Pope. "I see that the people of New Jersey know how to praise God even in the rain," John Paul said at the conclusion of his celebration. "It's liquid sunshine," said John Alger of St. Paul's Church in N.J., one of the almost 84.000 people who braved the drenching rain to see the pontiff. Testing the will of the most faithful was an initial stadium ban on umbrellas, imposed as a security precaution and a courtesy, to insure everyone could see. Later it became clear that the prohibition wasn't being enforced. n, The soaking siege was in fact the eastern fringe of a tropical depression left over from Hurricane Opal after it crashed into the Florida Panhandle and headed north.
