Dear Ann Landers: My "how-we-m- et wife and I first met on the telephone at Fort Carson, Colo., in early July 1944. She was employed by the signal office. I was a personnel sergeant. One of her duties was to phone the units when one of their soldiers received a telegram. 1 answered the phone many times, liked the voice at the other end and told her so, but she refused to go out with me unless I got another couple to go along. Our first date was in a rumble seat of a Ford near Prospect Lake in Colorado Springs. We became engaged the very next night and were married three months later in Centerville, Ind. She asked me if it would be OK to invite a few friends and family members to the wedding. 1 said, "Fine." Imagine my surprise when 200 people showed up, which was almost the whole town. The only people I knew were her parents and grandparents. A relative of hers who was a state policeman had a strange sense of humor. He had arranged with another state cop for us to be hauled in on our way to the wedding on the pretense of failing to stop at an intersection. He told the her uncle, who knew driver about the plan that we had to follow him to the county jail. Ytp, you guessed it, we both were locked up in our NEW YORK (AP) MAY 4:30 7:20 10:00 Sat. We were finally released, and I was seriously considering suing the state of Indiana for false half-hou- r, arrest. We finally got to the hall where everyone was waiting (and laughing), and the wedding took place. I went to pay the preacher and discovered that my furlough papers had been taken out of my wallet another gag. Her relatives were quite the jokers. I didn't see the humor in it. It was war time, and a leave of absence was hard to get. With no papers, I was a dead duck. Finally, we got through all the funny stuff, and I was happy to get away from her wacky relatives and enjoy a great, but brief, honeymoon. Nov. 12 will be our 54th anniversary. I saw my future sweetheart for the first time at church in the summer of 1945. He was dazzling in his white Navy uniform as he stood at the open church door in the bright summer sunlight. I was 17, leading the singing in our junior choir when he entered with his sister. When I saw his white cap perched saucily on the back of his blond head and his beautiful blue eyes smiling at me, my heart melted, my knees buckled, and I actually had to sit down. It was love at first sight. A year later, we were married. The minister was my father. It was a union that lasted 44 years, and produced four children arid 10 grandchildren. My handsome Navy man is gone now, but he is never out of my thoughts. I wouldn't trade those beautiful memories for anything in T.N. in Adair, the world. Okla.
