And that's a start. Craig Thompson, brand spanking new commissioner of the brand spanking new Mountain West Conference, was all smiles at the BYU-SaDiego State Thursday By DOROTHY KNOELL The Daily Herald n night. Like a candidate on the stump, Thompson slapped backs, shook hands and mugged for photographers. You wanted to say, "Relax, big fella, you've already got the job." Turns out, though, that working the crowd and generally jollying around weren't affectations. Thompson's just that kind of guy. One thing the league presidents who hired him will have to get used to is that Thompson doesn't seem even remotely capable of guile. A Minnesota native who once worked as assistant sports information director at Kansas State, Thompson answers questions quickly and openly without much pause to consider the consequences. He's a media treat, in other words. The conference bosses need a little sprinkled around the landscape right about now, so Thompson could be the right man in the right feel-goo- d place, ASKED ABOUT the possible tion of the MWC conference office, Thompson 'fessed up directly that while Salt Lake City technically was still in the running, Colorado Springs and Las Vegas had been the league's most aggressive suitors. So, Craig, where's it going to be? "Well, my wife mentioned something about liking snow and mountains," the new commish said. In other words, he's in Colorado. "But everybody wants to go to Las Vegas, so maybe we can have the office in the Springs and hold all our events down in Vegas," Thompson added as a few reporters chuckled. Of course, the subject of the name came league's up immediately. Thompson laughed out loud when he heard that we've already started pronouncing the MWC as PROYO This one was over before most of those few fans even settled into seats. People's perception of us will come from what we achieve, not our name," THOMPSON WASNT shy about discussing ongoing discussions with TV networks, and admitted straightaway that possjble bowl talks haven't gotten much past the stage. But that everything would be happening soon.
