Oprah Winfrey stars ; and makes you forget she s Oprah in this long, ambitious adapt Winfrey tion of the Tom Morrison novel, a tale of slavery's legacy in the years after the Civil War. Kimberly Elise and Thandie Newton hold everything together, and there are moments of keening power and terrifying poetry. R (violence, sexual situations, nudity, profanity, intense situations) BRIDE OF CHUCKY: 1 star (out of 5). Chucky. the satanic doll who comes to life with the soul of a serial killer, is back after r a hiatus and he has found himself a mate in "Bnde of Chucky." an absurdly silly movie about a pair of plastic fiends on a murder spree. For flunking freshman, the only chance to pass lies in an old college edict that gives straight As to the surviving roommates of a suicide. This dark comedy, produced by MTV, will play well with the target demographic (males age 18 to 25), but will leave the rest of us with a premise that sounds as plausible as a freshman elevator pass. Rated R, sexual situations. EVER AFTER 3 12 stars. Breathing fiesh air into the stale saga of Cinderella. "Ever After'' stars Drew Barrymore as the resourceful charwoman who doesn't need a prince to save her, but does have a hand in saving a certain Prince Henry. Enough for adventurers, and enough dernng-dcourtship to send romantics into raptures. With Dougray Scott as the prince and Anjelica Huston as the sly stepmother. PG-1(swordplay, threat of sexual violence) HALLOWEEN: H20 2 stars. Sharpen your kitchen knives: This slasher is pretty dull stuff. Although it begins promisingly, with Jamie Lee Curtis reprising her role as the woman continuing to be stalked by her psychotic brother, soon psychology gives way to feeble horror and only a movie geek could love. R (violence, blood, profanity, substance abuse) HOLY MAN 2 stars. It's billed as an Eddie Murphy comedy but it's neither a Murphy movie nor a comedy. It's really New Age claptrap about a religious pilgrim (Murphy) hired by a home shopping network exec (Jeff Goldblum) to put a spiritual spin on material acquisition. PG 13 (language) JOHN CARPENTER'S VAMPIRES 2 12 stars. Diehard fans who have deplored both erotic vampire movies that look like perfume commercials and comedies that turn ghouls into fools should weltradicome this return to bloody-mindetion. Vampires strike in New Mexico, and a wired James Woods leads a hit squad against them. R (violence, gore, sex, nudity, abuse of corpse) KNOCK OFF: 1 star. As a Hong Kong e exporter battling terrorists, Van Damme is back to his old tricks. The combat sequences are stunning and the questions posed by the mission undertaken by Tom Hanks and his squad are profound. R (graphic violence, language) SIMON BIRCH 2 stars. Rookie filmmaker Mark Steven Johnson's treacly adaptation of John Irving's "A Prayer for Owen Meany" puts the jerk in tearjerker, but its story of two searching for their spiritual parents boasts excellent performances by Joseph Mazzello, Ashley Judd and Oliver Piatt. PG (language, chil- 12 dren in jeopardv) SMALL SOLDIERS 1 12 stars. "Gremlins" without the manic glee, "Toy Story" without much of a story, this tale of action figures come to life and running amok is a charmless, violent, effects-drivemovie aimed squarely at the hearts of 6- - and boys. PG-1(violence, profanity, creepy ersatz Barbies) SOLDIER 2 stars. Garbled, occasionally nonsensical traslation of "Shane" not to mention steals from dozens of other westerns and science fiction clasto outer space.
