"Sound of Praise" is a negro spiritual influenced' song that makes the audience want to jump up and join the characters as then dance around the stage. Calypso, a capella and even a little section of talk show are thrown into the ship to add spice and keep things floating. "What the play really says is important," said McLean. "You can't be saved until you come onboard. The Lord will not save you until you let him. We think (Noah and his family) are really being saved by the rain, but they are being saved from themselves." The storyline is based on Ham, who is Noah's prodigal son. Ham struggles with his desires to follow God and still keep his independence and distance from his father. Ska bands from across the state would gather together for a big show. Over the years, the Ska party has grown into a Halloween party complete with costumes, decorations and of course live Ska music. "We wanted to have a fun party on Halloween that played up on the '50s horror exploitation films," said Jimmy Thompson, lead singer in My Man Friday, a local Ska band. There will be a costume party, prizes, treats and c?ndy. They are going all out on decorations and are turing (the Wrapsody) into a graveyard or a tomb." For those people who are ot hip on the Ska scene, here is a little .rundown i on Ska and ifs history. : ! Ska has been around since the 1960s arid has had multibleSevivals , . , throughout the past 35 years. It began in Jamaica and seemed to be a parallel universe to the Beetles and other popular groups from the U.S. From Ska; Reggae evolved, and groups like Bpbj Marley picked up on the hard Ska beat. In the late j; '70s, Ska came to England and America on the heela of u 1 the Punk Rock era. The third wave started in the U.S. with a group called the Toasters in New York, and then spread across the country to California. They continued to build through the end of the '80s, and then some pop rock groups started to b? influenced by the Jamaican style of music. like More recently, groups "Sublime" and the "Mighty, Mighty Bostones" have had Ska influenced music play across the radio waves. "If you really want to hear some good Ska, I would recommend 'Slackers,' 'Hepcat' or the 'Skatelites,"' Thompson said. The Jamaican's began Ska after listening to American R & B and Jazz. They blended it with the Jamaican rhythms and came up with a calypso type style, it was a new music that was named for the dance, Ska," Ska is similar to swing in that they are both very danceable and have a great beat. Ska has a very heavy offbeat while Swing has a strong down beat. u-i- j r" -..- . 10 at ( the door. r - Ziori Skalloween breaks barriers between music, haunts full-blow- Celt jrdays The Daily Herald WEST VALLEY Gaelforce, an Dance troupe in the tradition of RiverDance, will perform at 7:30 p.m. Thursday at the E Center.
