David's instincts are to lay low until they can figure a way out, but his sister, who thinks Pleasantville is more like Dullsville, has too much fun introducing boys to '90s-styl- e courting (let's just say they go way past first base), and so he and the other residents of Pleasantville become aware that there is an interesting life beyond '50s con, for language and formity. First-tim- e director Theresa Connelly returns to her Hamtramck hometown to make this fanciful, unfinished memory movie about a family threatened by its sexy females: iron fisted, 'torfbodted matriarch Jadzia (Lena Olin) and her rebellious teenage daughter Hala (Claire Danes). Too dreamy and undefined for its own good, it would have benefited from a little blue-colla- r substance. R; sexual theme, language. ANTZ: 3 fit st feature-lengt- logue. Apt Pupil: 3 stars. This film is rxised on a novella by Stephen King. It is a taut, low-kethriller of blackmail and spiritual decay. It is a case study in Nazi historical curiosity gone awry. An asteroid the size of Texas is heading towards earth, and who you gonna call? Oil rigger Bruce Willis, who takes a Dirty D:en style team of wildcatters and into deep space to drill the tt'ing into submission. The first hour is entertaining, and there are good perfor-irance- s from Billy Bob Thornton as the NASA point man and Steve Buscemi as comic relief, but the film soon implodes with the usual action movie cliches and ; contrivances. Rated violence, language, sexual situations. HARDLY WAIT: 3 Stars, CAN'T tveii the undiscnminating teen-ag,i .iliente at which this is aimed serves something brighter and funnier than this inoffensive romantic comedy, set at a graduation party where college bound nobody Ethan f'nhry has decided to declare his abid-i- i love for just jilted prom queen Ji'imiter Love Hewitt. Rated G. HALLOWEEN H20: 2 stars. Sharpen your kitchen knives: This slasher is pretty dull stuff. Whether or not this riveting, relevatory drama is the best war movie ever made is almost beside the point; its depiction of the invasion at Omaha Beach is the most realistic, and graphic, ever committed to film. If you can survive it, you join a mission headed by a citizen soldier, played brilliantly and quietly by Tom Hanks, sent to retrieve the sole surviving son (Matt Damon) of an mother who has lost three other sons to the war. Director Steven Spielberg has fashioned this film as an emotional odyessey, and it works at every level; philosophical, metaphorical and physical. Rated R; extremely graphic war violence, language.
