"You've specified the sources NEW YORK Amid all the .tedium and frustration that go . with doing your income taxes j each year, financial advisers say there are ways to turn the process into a very productive use of your time. If you take it as a chance to review and plan how you manage your money, the work you have to do to satisfy Uncle Sam can setrve a personal purpose as well, and the exercise can yield benefits far beyond any tax refund you may receive. So whether you fill out the forms yourself before the April 17 deadline, or hire a professional' to do the job for you, the experts urge you to try to learn as much as possible along the way. ' "The temptation is to forget it all until next year," concedes the accounting firm of KPMG Peat Marwick in its newsletter Financial Independence. "But the smart individual is taking a long look at what he or she wants to accomplish and determining how to do it. "We are going to do all we can do to make sure this becomes a $2 billion business." Motorola, the world's largest maker of cellular phones, is on the dem. The booming popularity of personal communications devices in particular the chips, or semicon- ductor integrated circuits, that make them work means big bucks to companies that make them. Rockwell International Corp., which makes chip sets for both computer and fax modems, in December completed a $170 million expansion of its Newport Beach, Calif., plant. An additional $20 million in improvements is in the works, and eventually it expects to add about 200 workers to its manufacturing staff. With the plant expansion, the Rockwell facility became one of 116 worldwide that makes chips out of wafers. The bigger the wafer, the more efficient the process. It also added contaminationClass 1 clean rooms -free areas that are 1 ,000 times cleaner than a hospital operating room which make it possible to manufacture chips with some of m 650-memb- er pt cost." I same fast track. In 1993, it bought Western Digital Corp.'s chip plant in Irvine, Calif., for about $111 million, after a sales contract between Rockwell and Motorola collapsed. Motorola says it will invest $165 million this year alone and about $435 million in total to expand the facility, which makes chips for cellular phones, pagers and compact-dis- c interactive players. Motorola has already added 50 work people to its force as part of the first phase of the expansion. An additional 100 will be brought on board in the coming year as the plant increases its manufacturing capacity by 30 percent. Both Rockwell and Motorol4 are riding a boom in the consumer electronics industry. Rockwell's growth is tied in part to the uptick in perspnal-computsales. Most computers sold today especially for home use, have in internal modem. A modem allocs the user to dial into the officer computer system or tap into thf Internet or a commercial online ' service such as Prodigy . Rocki-well Another growth area for are chips that make it possiblf for people to use one phone line for both voice and data. That way a person can talk on the telephone a!t the same time he is sending a(i electronic file or perusing the In,' ternet. Like Rockwell, Motorola opted to save time by expanding an existing facility rather than starting from scratch building a new facto few years it will be introducing products capable of easily moving video files from ef 400-memb- er chip-maki- net-wor- th ry, which takes years. But Daniel Yoho has a few tricks up his sleeve. Literally. Yoho, who teaches a four-pa- rt course called "Math, Money & at Kleck-ne- r Magic" to in School Green, Elementary Ohio, isn't above using a little sleight of hand to make his point. He has figured out, for example, how to turn two pieces into a trick he uses to illustrate eight the "magic" of compound interfifth-grade- fifth-grade- rs rs 50-ce- nt est.1 ' Yoho is no magician; in fact, a few alert pupils have sabotaged his tricks. When he's not performing rrfcgic tricks, Yoho keeps the on their toes by handing out pieces and dollar coins to pu-pi- js 5Q-ce- nt those who excel in his class. If all of this sounds pretty mercenary, that's just fine with Yoho. He wants his students to think a&out money: how to spend it, how td save, how to give it away . Yoho said he learned early on trjat many youngsters, even those wjio do well in math, have only a vague idea of how much things cest. During his first class, he asked pupils to write down on an index card what they would buy if they had $100. The answers ranged from "as many chicken wings as possible" (reasonable, although not advisable) to the Dallas Cowboys (not reasonable, even after last year's loss to the Browns). "They don't have an idea of the cost of things as they relate to their world," Yoho said. "Some don't even know how much a postage stamp costs." .Yoho tries to address that prob-;fe- nf by telling his pupils to write all of their purchases in a J down diary. He also instructs I' them to write down all of the ways j.' in which they earn income. I "Just about all of them get an .'allowance," he said. "I want to ;help them make choices and get control of their spending." u Yoho also wants to teach pupils ;how smart saving can help them stay ahead of inflation. To bring J; ; DQCE that point home, he asks pupils to form a ring with their thumb and index finger apart, walks around the room with a new $1 bill and tells them to try to catch it. Each time, the dollar slips through their fingers, Yoho said, which is what happens to people who don't have a spending plan. "Then I drop it through my fingers and I catch it every time," he said. "I say it's because I have a savings plan." Yoho doesn't want to come up with a new repertoire of tricks for every class, so he warns his pupils early on that anyone who gives away his secrets won't get any rewards. That usually keeps diem quiet.
