Provo, Liah - Page 3 Local historians assist in project Editor's note: The following historians spent many hours compiling the original lists from which Daily Herald readers chose the top 10 events, 10 most influential Utahns and 10 most influential Utah County individuals of the 20th (I960, 1961). He earned a doctorate in American history from the University of California at Berkeley (1965), and has won a number of prizes and honors including: the David and Beatrice Evans Biography Award, the Mormon History Association Best Book Award (twice), the Mormon History Association Best Article Award (three times) and the Daughters of the American Revolution History Medal Award. He is a fellow of the Utah State Historical Society and former chair of the Utah Board of State History. Alexander and his wife, the former Marilyn Johns of Ogden, live in Provo. Century. Richard Holzapfel Dr. Holzapfel is an assistant professor at BYU and the author of more than 50 articles and nearly 20 books, including the new Utah state seventh grade history i rJ textbook, "Utah: A Journey of Discovery," released in January 1999; and the new Utah County history, "A History of Utah County," released by the Utah County Commission in February 1999. Alan Kent Powell Kent Powell was born on Sept. 29, 1946, in Price, and grew up in nearby Huntington. He attended public schools in Emery County, and received his Lemuel Hardison Redd, Jr. Professor of Western American higher BYU. He Eastern Utah and the University of Utah where he earned a doctorate in history in 1976. Intensely interested in Utah's people and history, he has been employed with the Utah State Historical Society since 1969. His current assignment is historian and public history coordinator for the Utah State Historical j&ifled the BYU faculty jt University in Carbondale. He served as assistant director, associate director and director of the Charles Redd Center for Western Studies Society. Author, of more than editor, or 20 books and monographs and more than 80 articles, he specializes in Utah history, Western history, environmental history and Mormon history. Alexander was born in Logan, Aug. 8, 1935 and attended public schools in Ogden. He earned an associate of science degree from Weber State University (1955) and (1972-1992- ). his bachelor's and master's degrees at Utah State University State' University His duties include directing the 29 volume Centennial County History Project, working with local historical societies, administering the society's local history grants pro- gram, organizing the society's sponsored tours and conducting other activities to promote and document Utah's history. Robert Carter Robert Carter resides in - i ' educa- tion at the College of History at Illinois He was the Utah Historical Society's US. History Teacher of the Year in 1984 and won the Golden Apple Award for Excellence in Education from the school district in 1992. Carter earned a bachelor's degree from BYU in secondary education (history and English), and a master's from BYU in Western American his- 2jiA tory. After retirement, Carter became a historical researcher and has published numerous articles in The Daily Herald, Utah History Quarterly, Pioneer, Beehive History and Journal of Mormon History. He and his wife, Lyndia McDowell Carter, recently completed the Fort Utah location project in Provo. She is a former public school teacher of Utah history and English. She is currently doing research on trail and emigration history. She is a writer, 9j researcher and historian; and is currently working on a book on the Martin Handcart Company. She acted as a consultant for Provo City on the Provo Se6quicentennial history projects, including assisting her husband, Robert, with the location of Fort Utah.
