Wonka's factory exists, but no Oompa Lcompas By PETER ML'CHA Knight Ridder Newspapers Is Willy Wonka's chocolate factory real? Isiah Harvey A. It wasn't at first. The Q fac- tory was all when Roald Dahl wrote his famous book, "Charlie and the -- Chocolate Factory," in 1964. Candy genius Willy Wonka . was imaginary, too. Then in 1971, the book was made into a movie, "Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory." That led to an idea: Since Willy Wonka was famous, why not sell candy with that name? That's what one Midwest company did. Later, Nestle bought the company and gave it and its Illinois factory a new name: the Willy Wonka Candy Factory. It makes a lot of candies, including Everlasting Gobstoppers, Nerds, Runts and Pixie Stix. It's not like the factory of the book or the movie. None of the 375 workers is an Oompah lioompah, for example, and the ' factory doesn't even make any make-believ- e make-believ- e chocolate bars. That part is changing, though. A Wonka Bar is coming out in October, and just like in the stories, children might find a golden ticket inside. The prizes will be announced later. Q. How do they get stripes in toothpaste tubes? Emily Janosik A. The key fact is that colored gels hardly mix with white paste. So they'll stay separate inside a tube or a pump. The trick then is just filling them with special machines to leave columns or rows of gel around the white paste. When the tube is squeezed, or the pump is pushed, some of each will come out, making stripes. Aquafresh and striped types of Colgate work this way.
