Show Try your hand at hand-mad- e jewelry By KALANI CROPPER Inspired by a friend in Los Angeles who created the most charming necklace as a gift for a birthday party, I decided it was time to the world of jewelry making. For our Art Farm classes this week, we are creating all kinds of wearable jewelry using a variety of beads. I envisioned necklaces, but my art students knocked me out with anklets, rings, and bracelets. I was pleased to find that in the valley we have an excellent variety of sources for beads of all kinds. Check the malls, craft stores and jewelry suppliers. - soon-to-be-te- Beading is a wonderful, creative experience for children involving the skills of organization, dexterity, design and patience. In class we first discussed the many uses different cultures have had for beads. In some Indian cultures beads were used as money. During the centuries, many fine lady's dress, hat, neck or gloves have been adorned with beads. YOU CAN often find pearl-ize- d beads on wedding dresses. Beads of varying styles, textures, materials and sizes are found in almost every culture for many centuries. I then asked each child to take 15 minutes to look over the beads, think about how they will organize them and select the beads they will use. This is a step which many children will want to skip over. In class, we learned that although they didn't want to take the time or patience to think logically through the process, in the end they were grateful they did and had learned some important lessons for themselves about planning, design and organization. i Beading takes a calm touch. It can be difficult get small wires or threads through tiny beads. If you are using a repeating pattern, without continual concentration you may find yourself removing beads to repair mistakes. It may seem like a simple process but once you are half way through, even if you are stringing beads purely randomly, the patterns that occur will begin to attract your attention and in some cases displeasure. Random bead stringing can often cause strange conglomerations of the same colors or patterns which can upset the continuity of the strand. AS WE watched the children create amazing strings of glass baubles, we began to think that perhaps beading is a very natural human skill. Man has been doing it for centuries. It does not take heavy brain power for the act of stringing. The beauty and art is in the designs, patterns and color combinations which charms our eyes. This simple tasks envelopes our minds into the realms of spatial organization, the transference of color in light, shapes, dimensions and mathematics. Beading or jewelry making can be very inexpensive or costly. Shop carefully for your materials. You may look at it as a dol- lar or two here or there, but when you start adding wire or thread, a variety of beads, clasps and findings together you can quickly run up a relatively expensive bill. Have you ever sat in a room that is an uncomfortable 72 degrees with florescent lighting, while outdoors people are running, jumping, and sunning in the comfortable 72 degrees? Well, all my roommates and I have. So we decided to have a spring break. I say "we" decided to take a spring break, because BYU as a school has most definitely decided not to have a spring break. I think they don't so B.YU students won't mix with ejril U of U students and end uj getting in a lot of trouble. J So there we were with a holiday and no idea what to do with it. Should vie sit outside and play cards al day? Would we wander abound parking lots making fun of people? i "No," we said, "we shall do what any college student would do, go on a road trip." And furthermore we shall go to the most typical destination for northern iJtahns, southern Utah. d d WE PACKED a car and wtere off. I drove faster than the wind, reaching speeds of up to 75 miles an hour. The funny thing about driving is even though you are g&ing fast, it is still quite possibly the most boring thing to d&on the planet. J Since we had 5 hours of driving ahead of us, we brought plenty of CDs. This was a problem. If you haven't noticed, tastes in music widely differ from person to person. In this car, it ranged from classical music to the most acid rock. ;The funny thing about music, at least popular music, isHhat it really is all about the sane. Yet some people think thtat one form is vastly superior to others. Take for instance '80s rock. Right now, it seems aa though it has come back. THESE FEELINGS would be just fine if people would realize that it's just a matter of taste. And consequently, not think less of someone for liking alternative to classic rock. I luckily didn't have to participate in many of these augments because I was driving. On the down side I don't think I got to listen to anything that I wanted to. It's hard to put a CD in the player while driving. I was OK with that. I got to hear a lot of music that I might not have other wise listened to. I did have one major conflict on the way down to St. George concerning music. It started snowing and it was hard to drive. So I turned it off the music. Everyone complained. I can't really blame them. I left them there to sit and be bored for an hour while I drove through the storm. But on a whole, I think silence is ' better then dying. I think that they would agree with me too. Here I am at the end of my column and I haven't even gotten you to the destination. Well the column was about a road trip. Known as "specific language impairment," it crosses racial, cultural and socioeconomic boundaries, leaving children with academic wounds and social problems, according to a study conducted by two professors at Brigham Young University. To put SLI's influence in context, consider seven percent of Utah's live births last years is more than 3,000 children. "The sad thing is that most of those parents have no idea their babies have the disorder until the children are old enough to go to preschool," said Bonnie Brinton, dean of gradu- ate studies at BYU and coauthor of the study. Children with SLI have problems processing language that inhibit how they talk and understand. what they Generally, the first sign of the disorder is that children will not speak as proficiently and as early as their peers. Also, chil dren will most likely struggle as they begin school. The impairment is believed to be a neurological disorder, but no one is exactly sure what causes it. "Children with SLI have a hard time using language to interact socially," said Martin Fujiki, professor of audiology and language pathology and Brinton's husband and coauthor. "Our observations support peer and teacher perceptions that children with SLI often operate on the outskirts of their society, the classroom." Brinton and Fujiki's study describes peer evaluations, teacher evaluations and of six children with SLI urider the age of 12. Teachers perceived children with the impairment as having more behavioral problems and poorer social skills than others, and the peers of the students with SLI saw them as excluded, ignored and somewhat of an annoyance. The children with the disorder perceived themselves as more lonely than typical children. "I am like a broken toy," said an 11 year-old boy. "I just get from one person to passed another. Nobody wants to play with a broken toy." Verbal vs. nonverbal Researchers also evaluated how the children with SLI interacted with typical children, comparing them to two control groups of ordinarily developing children. All six of the children with SLI had more problems initiating conversations than most normal youngsters, and four of them had more trouble working, playing and negotiating with other children in their not have.
