Perhaps a half-mil- e away, as your car rises and falls alone the d'ustv nackcountry roadbed of Hishwa". -- 8A. The "World's Largest Totem Pole," all of 90 feet tall, juts above the tree tops like a mirage against the pale blue sky. It is the harbinger of a small park filled with surreal o statues and monoliths that clash in hue and form with the d stillness of the Oklahoma countryside. This strange roadside wonder was created by local artisan and visionary Ed Galloway. He spent the last years of his life, from 1940 until his death in 1963, building a giant walk-i- n totem pole and its accompanying figures as a tribute to Native American culture. Galloway's totem poles, especially his rendition, are decidedly different from the classic carved wooden monoliths. Galloway's totem poles are oddly bulbous and conical, with symbolic imagery of stylized lizards and birds, chieftains in headdresses and native weaponry imposed on the surface in relief. Other structures include a giant buff-color- Day-Gl- khaki-colore- sharp-beake- d arrowhead, various wide-eye- d bird and animal statues, and chairs and a round table done in a salmon and crow motif. Nearby stands a similarly decorated building, the Fiddle House, that was once home to Galloway's carvings, including fanciful violins and furniture. Sadly, the Fiddle House was vandalized over the years, stripped bare of its treasures. And the park as a whole was left to the elements and the emptiness that came when old Route 66 and its roadtrippers were interstated away. Now the lcK'al historical society is working to repaint the totem poles, recover carvings removed eight-side- Tourist slayings reinforce city's 'Miami Vice' image d hand-hew- n Park 7 Directions: The park is two and a h alf miles east of Foyil; take Oklahoma Route 66 (old U.S. Route 66)toHwy. 28A. My fourth memorable winter getaway was an asYellowstone Nasignment tional Park after the devastating fires that hopscotched through the park in the summer of 1988. You can't begin to compare winter in Chicago to winter in Yellowstone, where readings as low as minus 66 degrees have been recorded. During winter, Yellowstone's roads give way to big yellow snow coaches, used for touring and transportation, as well a snowmobiles. Snow blankets the park, making it a haven for crosscountry skiers and for tourists like me who don longjohns, jeans, thermal down parkas and warm hats to see the park's sights.
