Show Mum 'The Daily Herald i'om An G Wednesday, November 4, 1992 toddler frlo eEiosen as ambassadors By SHARON M. HADDOCK Herald Staff Writer " W - PROVO The lively Hansen triplets of Orem are busy and endearing proof that medical research funded by the March of Dimes and other charities save infant lives. Born August 1, 1990, shortly after their mother went into labor at 26 Vi weeks of pregnancy, John, Nathan and Jason would not have survived a decade ago, explained Dr. Ronald Stoddard, UVRMC perinatologist. Stoddard spoke briefly at the kick-oluncheon at the medical center announcing the selection of Laurie and John Hansen's sons as the 1993 March of Dimes' ambassadors. The triplets were actually part of a set of quadruplets. A brother, David, survived only the first nine weeks. But John, Nathan and Jason thrived, each undergoing at least two major surgical procedures, each the recipient of months of intensive care in the newborn ICU at UVRMC. Each weighed less than two pounds at birth. Stoddard said the use of Surfactant a product produced from animals used to line and lubricate newborn lungs to prevent their coland the lapse made the critical difference in the triplet's recovery. Without the availability of the technology and the medications, premature infants would be looking at uncertain futures even if they lived, said Stoddard. Laurie Hansen said she and her husband tried unsuccessfully to have children before she became pregnant with the quadruplets on fertility drugs. She thanked the medical staff and the people behind the research that saved her babies, noting that her sons not only survived but survived with a chance for "a high quality of life." All three are active, bright, personable children who keep their parents hopping. "We deliver small miracles" is an appropriate themeline for the March of Dimes campaign then, said Sid Sandberg, Chairman of the local March of Dimes Foundation board. Low birthweight and prematurity are the biggest threats to infants born in America today, said Stoddard. .
