The arctic air that kept much of the Northeast in the deep freeze for a week relented today, but a warmer front also was expected to bring snow and freezing rain to most of the region by tonight. Snow also was expected over the northern Great Lakes region, with rain predicted for much of Illinois and Iowa and parts of Missouri, Georgia and Tennessee. The warm front that sent temperatures shooting up to the mark in Iowa and Nebraska on Tuesday was to begin breaking ee up today, with highs not expected to get out of the 40s.
