It's just an option, and the media get paid for inflating these developments. Let me put it this way. Other people feel your "success" more than you do. When I go somewhere to read, it feels like a sort of celebration is going on. At times like that, you realize a lot of people are reading your books and appreciating their storytelling quality-Qfo- r that I'm appreciative. But I don't know about all this success stuff or like to think in those terms. Q. What about the evolution of yourwork- - how has it transformed in the space between "Mama" and "Disappearing Acts?" A. Both books are somewhat graphical. I think my next book will be more of a departure. Acts" was Q. " Disappearing a mixed more reception greeted by than your first novel. Did you feel the usual pressures of the second-tim- e novelist when writing "Disappearing Acts?" A. "Disappearing Acts" was a Terry McMillan has earned a place alongside such popular black novelists as Alice Walker and Glo- ria Naylor. Her two novels, "Mama"(1987)and "Disappearing !v SHARON M. The period costumes are well done. Kor a roadshow or if family were in this play, it would undoubtedly receive rave reviews. Hut for a professional production it lacks. Several times the song is three to four measures old before the actor or actress gets up to speed. The plot designed to be light is so light as to be shallow and unbelievable. Although the '40s were simpler times, the teens in that era still faced major problems and heartaches weren't easily dismissed. Romance did not necessarily begin at the campfire on cue. The cas members often slip a sidelong glance at the audience which destroys the psychological barrier that needs to exist between this type of theatrical production and the audience seated almost on the set. The Valley Centre Playhouse starts out at a disadvantage because the building is old and run- - Acts" (1989), explore the problems of black life in contemporary urban America. Both books are now available in paperback from Washington Square PressPocket Books. Aside from widespread critical acclaim, McMillan is one of the lucky authors to have their work optioned for the movies by a major Whitney Houston, who hopes to make the film version of "Disappearing Acts."Here, McMillan, who teaches at the University of Arizona in Tucson, talks about her latest book, the pressures of success, and her view that "men aren't all that complicated." Q. In the past couple of years your career has really taken off. How does it feel to be compared to Alice Walker, to have your work considered by many critics as at Play Review Must B8 ArtsEntertainment IfMH) Ihv IKiilv Herald, I'rovo, I'tah down. (It's also difficult to find in the twilight at 780 North 200 East in Lindon). The chairs are lumpy ard the carpet sporadic. It's hard to relax into the story. Again, no one likes to throw water on a production that quite clearly means a great deal to those involved. The children in the audience seemed to really like the show. There were grandparent-typ- e and mom and dad-typ- e patrons who were beaming through each number. For them, it certainly is a triumph. However, with the tremendous competition in Utah Valley from community theater and professional productions, Valley Centre Playhouse cannot expect to draw in sell-ocrowds with less than a thoroughly excellent show. The show ended this weekend. "Hotel Frankenstein: Part Two" opens Sept. 28.. star-sing- er the forefront of au-tob- io contemporary black fiction? to be A. It's quite flattering compared to Alice Walker, but I don't see myself as all that successful. Q. Stop there. Not many writers get their second novels optioned for the movies by Whitney Houston. A. All the hype about this movie has helped sales. I do feel that they want to make a movie and that Whitney Houston is interested, ut be- personal writing experience tween myself and the story I was telling; I don't think about reviewers when I'm writing. In terms of its critical reception, I think my work is similar to Spike Lee's-a- t least in terms of characterization and subject matter. I don 't write about stock characters, this is my world. Q. Speaking of influences, then. what writers do you admire? A. Ring Lardner, Gabriel Garcia Marquez, AnneTyler, Toni Morrison, John Wideman. But I'd have to put Anne Tyler at the top of the list. Her work is very realistic, and she pays a lot of attention to her characters: they're always eccentric. They may appear ordinary, but they're always complex. Q. The main character in "Disappearing Acts" is named Zora, and much was made of this deliberate evocation of the seminal black writer Zora Neal Hurston. A. I named the character Zora just to pay homage to Zora Neal, that's all. I'd been compared to her by a lot of readers, and for years I've had the utmost respect for her. But I think people take it too far. Q. And what about the gritty character of Franklin? A lot of people were surprised by your ability to portray a male character with such dead-o- n accuracy. A. I was able to do Franklin because he was a composite of a lot of men I've known. If anything was proven, I think it's that men aren't all that complicated. People think there's this mystique about writing about the opposite sex, but none of us is really that complicated. Q. What draws readers to your A. I like to think of my writing as very grounded in real life. I explore things that could happen to real people. Language also has a to do with it. The way my to a lot of people, especially to critics, but that's just tough nuggies. I don't .like to sugar-coreality or language. Q. What's your final word on "Disappearing Acts?" A. Out of all the criticism I got, it was that directed toward Zora "that got on my nerves the most. She didn't epitomize a stereotype the reading public was used to seeing- - people thought she acted like a white girl, which pissed me off. People think that she's a bland black character because she's educated and she's not. barefoot and pregnant living in the projects.
