Show Sunday, September Center activities resume after holiday weekend The Eldred Center will be and for the china dolls classes, taught by Kaye Croft, beginning Sept. 11, and sewing with Sybil, beginning Thursday, Sept. 6, is being held at the Eldred Center. Those registering on or before the first day of class will be given a discount. All class members are required to hold a current membership card. Other classes for the fall session include creative crafts,, held on Wednesdays at 9 a.m., creative writing, Wednesday, 11 a.m., Merry Mixer's square dancing, Monday, 2:30 p.m., beginning square dancers, Tuesday, 2:30 p.m., sit and stay fit armchair aerobics, Wednesday and Friday at 11 a.m., oil painting, Friday, 9 a.m., ballroom dance, Thursdays, 1 p.m., and quilting and pool daily. Dale Mackay, Council On Aging board representatives, will be available to help seniors with closed on Monday for the Labor Day holiday. Regular activities will resume on Tuesday. The annual "Watermelon Bust" will be held at the Eldred Center on Friday, immediately following the luncheon at approximately 12:30 p.m. Luncheon reservations are required before noon on Thursday. Papa's Parlor Picker's will re- turn with music for dancing and listening pleasure on Tuesday, beginning at 11 a.m. They will provide music for the matinee dance the first and third Tuesday of each month. Mrs. Thomson retired from Utah State University Extension Services. While serving there she organized the Utah County Nutrition Education Council which planned and inaugurated the Nutrition Program for the Elderly (Senior Citizen Mobile Meals). She served as chairman of the Mobile Meals Stearing Committee and the Nutrition Council For The Aging. She was also a member of the 1990-199- 1. 1989-199- 0. The Senior Associates Volunteering Valuable Years program at Penn grew out of a trend that began in the 1970s, when retired teachers sought ways to stay intellectually active without the pressures and expenses of enrolling in degree programs. Other programs still going include "Prime Timers," at California State University, "Learning in Retirement," at Duke University in North Carolina, and the "Senior Adult Program." at Phoenix College in Arizona. The special slant at Penn is getting seniors involved in all aspects of campus life, even as living textbooks for history students, said Nancy Ellis, associate director for education at the Center for the Study of Aging at Penn. PHILADELPHIA (AP) Edna Green devoted her life to education, retiring nine years ago as head of the science department at a public high school for gifted girls. Today she is back in school, a student this time, under a program at the University of Pennsylvania that permits retirees to audit courses in exchange for volunteer work. They also re asked to contribute $50 per semester to a scholarship fund. Retirees can audit anything from poetry to engineering courses. They also can use the gymnasium and pool and receive other student benefits, such as reduced theater rates. They volunteer as tutors, counselors, techincal assistants, office and library assistants.
