Lila Barrus died Sunday morning after she had a stroke the night of July 12, said her daughter, Nola Aydelotte. Mrs. Barrus turned 106 on July 3 and received a birthday cake from Orem Mayor Jerry Wash-bun- v When Washburn wished her a happy birthday, Mrs. Barrus wished him a happy birthday back. Life in the United States was different when Mrs. Barrus was born on July 3, 1901. A loaf of bread cost 3 cents, a gallon of milk cost 30 cents and a house went for $4,000. Mrs. Barrus's family described her as caring and kind. "She is the kindest, sweetest, most loving, adorable mother," Aydelotte said earlier this month. Aydelotte, remembers her' mother peeling peaches for Ayde-lotte- 's three sisters, one brother and herself. Mrs. Barrus would peel as many as the children wanted. Another daughter, Eloise Bronson, said one of her favorite possessions is a quilt her mother, a talented sewer, made her from old dresses. Bronson also remembers coming home from school as a child to homemade cinnamon rolls with powdered sugar frosting. Benjamin Shaw, z3, was driving on July 14 at 5 a.m. when his 1999 green Pon-tia- c Grand Am spun out of control at the intersection of University Parkway and 2230 North in Provo. There is an automobile homicide charge that is a lesser, felony, but Grunander said the state chose to charge Shaw with the higher felony. "It's just that the conduct was that much more negligent," he said, noting that the prosecution will have to prove why later. In the accident Edward Cody Fairbanks, 22, from Provo, was ejected from the vehicle. Fairbanks is also known as Cody Hone.
