Not long ago a national research . corporation conducted a compre hensive survey among high school seniors to find out their thinking about certain economic issues that a fleet freedom in a basic way. Here are some of the findings: find-ings: ' Sixty-one per cent of the high school seniors did not believe in the need for profits. Eighty-three per cent of them estimated that American industry as a whole makes profits up to fifty per cent. Sixty-two per cent about two-thirds two-thirds ihom;lit workers should not produce all they were capable of producing. Sixty-six per cent said very heavy progressive income taxes are good for the country. Fifty-three per cent expressed themselves in favor of government govern-ment ownership of banks, railroads rail-roads and steel companies. High school students are not much better informed in the field of the free government, which is a result of our personal enterprise system. A more recent survey among students showed that only one in nine could name the Chief Justice of the United States Supreme Su-preme Court, only a little more than one-half could name five Cabinet positions in the Executive Branch of the Government, only about one-fourth could list as many as three provisions of the Bill of Rights, and about half could not name the United States Senators from their own states. These high school students will be running our country in the very near future. If it is to be the kind of country we have known, we must not allow victory in the battle for the minds of these young people to go to the Mistaken |
