Show Page B6 - THE HERALD, Provo, Utah, Friday, November 17. 1989 Film maker honored Salt Lake Art Center: new twist on nutcrackers Beth Poison, executive producer of the CBS movie "Go Toward the Light," will receive a national film award from Brigham Young University in special ceremonies Nov. 29 and 30 on the Provo, Ut, campus. from 1983-8Her list of awards include seven Emmy nominations, with three of those nominations turning into winners in 1981, 1983 and 1984. Much of her work has dealt with major social problems, and she has been recognized by groups throughout the United States. The of two books, Pol-so- n was an award-winnin- g newspaper reporter in Virginia from 1965 to 1975. She graduated from Old Dominion University at Norfolk, Va., with an M.A. in English, and is a native of Corapeake, North Carolina. The Theatre and Film Department, the Communications Department and the Motion Picture Studio are cooperating with the college in the tribute to Poison. Of the award, Dean Mason, said, "The BYU Whitaker Award will be presented only on those occasions when an outstanding theatrical motion picture made for television or for theatre distribution conveys in a superior way a message which recognizes the existence of a loving God and demonstrates the dignity and moral courage of one or more of His children. "It is the intention of this tribute," he added, "to acknowledge not only the depiction of religious values but also to honor motion pictures that are artistically and cinematically excellent." Judge Whitaker founded the BYU studio in 1953 after a distinguished career at Disney Studios. "He was committed to building faith in God through film," said Peter Johnson, current director of the Motion Picture Studio. "His pioneer work at the university has left a legacy which we wish to remember through the occasional presentation of the Whitaker Medal." Whitaker died in 1985. The award, the Wetzel 0. "Judge" Whitaker Award for Reli- gious Values in Films, was established this month by the College of Fine Arts and Communications as a way of honoring the founder of the BYU Motion Picture Studio and to encourage feature motion pictures that stress religious values. In making this first award to Poison, BYU honors a spiritually sensitive and artistically creative filmmaker, according to James A. Mason, dean of the College of Fine Arts; and Communications. 'tMs. Poison has captured on film tiie- laith and moral courage of a young boy and his parents who face the illness and death of a youngster from AIDS caused by a blood transfusion," he said. "This is done with honesty and compassion, without Undue sentimentality. In short, it is a film that opens a window to a reaMife story of human adversity and shows how faith, coupled with strong moral character, can eventually allow frail human beings to eope! with a lingering death sentence for an innocent boy." Poison was the of the Harper & Row book upon which the movie was based. It was featured in the June 1988 Reader's Digest as its book selection, and was named by the Digest as its best book selection of 1988. It aired on national television Nov. 1. This same film received a Christopher Award for 1988, which recognizes programming based on the Judeo-Christiconcept of service to God and all humanity. Poison has been an independent producer of television movies and specials since 1981. From 1975-8- 1 she was a documentary and investigative television producer for NBC News. She produced the Barbara Walter Specials for ABC Television or or an AUTOMATIC SCORING!! 1830. o o o o o o Autnentic Sooer C Movie Title ; . SB Fried Cattish.
