Mine 16 recent came just before Christwhen a fire in the A recent column on Provo's Rex Berry and his ties with the small town of Helper prompted a letter from Helper postmaster Walt Borla along with an article about the town that ran in the August, 1988 Postmasters Gazette. The article was written by Shir-len- e Fitzner, Western Regional Editor of the Gazette, following a trip to Helper. It is titled, Town Named after a Locomotive." I didn't know the origin of Helper's name until I read the article. It is an interesting town and I'm going to part of the story in the hope it might give you a better idea of our neighbor to the southeast. Helper, the town named after a locomotive. " ... According to Borla, Helper is the only towrr in the United States named for a locomotive. Helper, a terminal point for the Rio Grande Railroad between Denver and Salt Lake City is situated at the foot of a mountain range separating Eastern Utah from Central Utah. "Freight trains from Denver and coal trains originating at Helper require a 'helper' engine to push the train to the summit of the mountains to the west. At the summit the 'helper' engine is detached from the train for a return trip to Helper to await another assignment for a local coal or incoming train from Colorado. "Just after the turn of the century, the railroad and mining re-pri- nt & to and Greece their fortune in Utah. Among the immigrants was Postmaster Borla 's father, a native of Northern Italy. "The arrival of the immigrants, combined with the hustle and bustle of the coal industry, spawned a renegade town in a strictly moral Mormon state. Noted University of Utah historian Helen Zeese Papanickolas, herself a native of Helper of Greek heritage, refers to her hometown as an 'isolated island in Zion.' "The immigrants worked hard and played hard. The expanding railroad yards and 28 coal mines circling Helper provided a livelihood unknown in their native countries. At the same time, as the industrial barons of the rail and coal industries sought to take advantage of this foreign labor, a union movement struggled to life. "As a result, Helper and the surrounding coal industry saw its share of labor strife and turmoil as workers fought for their rights and a welcome end to a way of life epitomoized by the lyrics of a popular ballad of the day: 'Mine 16 tons and what do I get? Another day older and deeper in debt. St. Peter, don'i you" call me, 'cause I can't go. I owe my soul to the company store.' " ... men and one woman. "Major explosions in Utah coal mines have come with unwelcome regularity, with 201 miners dying in one at the turn of the century and 176 in a 1924 accident. "The Borla family's life is intertwined with the coal industry. Postmaster Borla's father was killed in a mining accident in 1950 after 42 years of working underground. Borla's son, John, is a mining engineer at an area mine. "The railroad has abandoned its roundhouse and much of its rail yard operation. Faster, shorter trains known as sprint trains stream through town from the east, most not requiring a 'helper engine for the powerful diesel locomotive. The heavier coal trains still require the boost up the hill as the coal heads for ts electrical throughout the west. "Today half of Helper's population consists of retired miners and retired railroad workers or Tails' as they are known colloquially. They still frequent the taverns and clubs in the town. They enjoy a cold beer with old friends, play cards, shoot pool, sip coffee and reminisce about the 'good ole days' Helper will never see again." That's a quick tour of Helper, a e mining town out of the old west. I'm indebted to Walt Borla for passing it along. steam-generati- Postmaster Borla recalls many interesting experiences of his early days as a in Helper. '"In the late 1940s and early '50s, we were known as the Mafia post office,' he notes. 'The entire complement of 13 employees in the office were either of direct Italian descent or married to someone of Italian descent.' ... The dangerous and dirty business of coal mining is not without its tragedies and Helper has seen more than its share of grief in tne mines.
