Show - THE HERAID, Page B2 Provo, Utah, Friday, September Doer Valley rated third in ski poll NEW YORK (BW SportsWire) DaDlas By DAVE GOLDBERG AP Football Writer After a deceptive 1 exhibition season, the enthusiasm in Dallas has quickly waned after a 28-- 0 loss to New Orleans on opening day. 3-- -- For the second straight year, Vail, Colo, has been rated the nation's best ski resort and previously WhistlerBlackcomb, British Columbia, is number two, according to Ski Magazine's annual ranking of North American ski resorts released in the magazine's current (October) issue. The survey asked Ski Magazine readers to evaluate ski resorts they have visited in the past two years and ranked them, on a one to five scale in each of 11 categories: challenge, terrain quality, terrain extent, snow making, ski school, lifts, location, food, customer service, and family programs. Subscribers were also asked to rate the overall quality of a resort and that rating was added to the individual category scores to give a final ranking. When asked to rank the top resorts based on only their "gut feeling," and not on specific cate-ories, both readers and ski writers fwho were also polled for comparison purposes) ranked Whistler Blackcomb number one. There was, however, surprisingly little agreement between subscribers and writers over the rest of the list. Aspen rated number three with readers, but ranked a lowly 20 among the writers. New Mexico's Taos was one of the writer's favorites, ranking second, while readers put the area 15, 1989 33rd. The survey was gleaned from questionaires from 3,000 randomly selected Ski Magazine subscribers and 100 randomly selected members of the U.S. Ski Writers Association. North America's top ski resorts, based on these rankings are: 1. Va. Colo. 2 WhittlerBlKkcomb B.C. ' 3. Door Villty, Utah 4. Snowmaaa, Colo. 4. Atom Mountain. LIES, DAMN LIES in at trying AND STATISTICS The most deceptive statistic in football is defense against the Bears face crucial division battle Coach Jimmy Johnson says maybe he was too optimistic although he took pains after the final preseason win over Houston to point out that the Cowboys still needed a lot of help. One place help may be needed is at football's most crucial position owner. Johnson's buddy, Jerry Jones, is already giving him advice, siding with Herschel Walker's complaint about being underused Walker carried just 10 times (for 8 yards) against the Saints. "It does look like we need to get Herschel in the game plan," Jones says. Jones has also decided that there are two tiers of fans the average guy who sits in the stands or watches on television who pay big and the bucks to sit in luxury boxes. The low rollers get their information from the poor souls writers and broadcasters who crowd into locker rooms and interview areas, climbing over discarded equipment and dodging wayward minicams to get a few e words of wisdom from players and coaches. The in Dallas now will get their information firsthand Jones has decided to let them into the already mobbed locker rooms. "They can also bring a friend if they like," he says. "I know what it means to have $1 million invested in a suite, and I know what it means to have a little part of something extra," ?&mu$ If the Chicago Bears were wise, they'd dress up in gold and green Sunday when the Minnesota Vikings come to town. For until proven otherwise, the downtrodden Green Bay Packers pose more of a threat to the Vikings than the Bears. "If they have any weakness, its well disguised," Mike Ditka said of the Vikings, who steamrollered a good Houston team 38-- 7 last Sunday and beat the Bears 31-- 7 last year. They also beat Chicago at home last year but managed to lose the NFC Central Division title by losing twice to Green Bay, a team that won only two other games all season. Minnesota indeed looked awesome Sunday, but the Bears also played well against a opponent, beating Cincinnati fourth-quart4 on a drive engineered by Mike Tom-cza- k. On defense, Dan Hampton did his imitation of the Minnesota 17-1- rd er er defense that sacked Warren Moon six times. The oddsmakers think the kings are a better team, making the Bears only favorites in a spread that includes three points for the home field. Moreover, Minnesota's only loss to Chicago in the past two years was in a game played by strike replacements (Mike Koh-enswas at quarterback for the Bears that day.) "Mark has just been a great asset to this franchise and a great gentleman in the community and with the team and his teammates," said General Manager Tim Howells. Led by Eaton, the Jazz held opponents to 99.7 points per game last season and allowed the opposition to shoot only .434 percent from the field, a franchise record and the lowest total in the NBA since 1973-74-,' when the Milwaukee Bucks held opponents to .425 percent.
