However, Idaho's population actually may be back up over a million, Idaho state officials who work with census data said. "We know 1986 was a bad year," state Chief Economist Michael Ferguson said. "We know employment levels were below a year earlier. The economy was definitely having some problems. We're getting current economic information that 1987 has been a year of slow but steady growth. Yet the census comes out with these numbers." Ferguson said, "I pointed out to them that their methodology is just plain wrong, to call that a provisional 1987 estimate. They said, 'Yeah, that's a good point,' but they stand by it. To my knowledge, they don't evert make any attempt to adjust it for the fact that it's a year behind. "In effect, the July 1987 estimate could be on the low end because the data going into it is in effect looking back before then." He noted that school population figures from the fall of 1986, rather than the fall of 1987, were used. Information on federal income tax returns for 1986 also contributed to the report. The volunteers are on call for one shift every other week. The female member of the team helps the rape victim according to the need. The volunteer may accompany the victim to the hospital, and through the police questioning, or may simply give support over the phone. The male team member provides a support system for the family of the victim, and others who may be significantly affected by the rape. Because of the nature of the work, the volunteers receive a substantial amount of training to allow them to understand their Dosi- 48-ho- ur tion. Caywood said that volunteers who are interested in working on a rape crisis team must attend the next training session which will start Saturday and run through Jan. 13. The training is 10 hours on Saturday, eight on Sunday, and four hours on the last three training days. Because of the of time spent in training the volunteers, they are asked to make a long term commitment and stay with the program for at least eight months. According to Caywood, students who are studying in related fields such as psychology, social services, and family counseling are used successfully in the program. Mature men and women from the community who have a desire to serve also make good volun- teers. Anyone interested in becoming a rape crisis volunteer may call the United Way Volunteer Center at Other community volunteer opportunities include: Citizen Advocacy needs volunteers to become an advocate for a mentally retarded individual.
