Lawrence Martin Jenco hugged a at a former suprise reunion today and kept a y companion-in-captivit- pledge to deliver a message from hi.i Lebanese Moslem kidnappers to the spiritual leader of the Anglican Church. He later told reporters that he felt like the film character "E.T.," who kept saying "home, home." "I want to go home," the priest said. Jenco, 51, of Joliet, 111., was released Saturday in east Lebanon by the Shiite Moslem kidnappers of Islamic Jihad after 19 months of captivity. He is scheduled to return to the United States on Friday. The Roman Catholic priest, who suffers from a heart condition and appeared pale and drawn, delivered the message to Archbishop of Canterbury Robert Runcie during a private meeting at Lambeth Pal- ace, the prelate's official resiJenco had delivered the message to Pope John Paul II at dence. the Vatican on Wednesday. The content of the message was not disclosed. He was accompanied during his meeting with Runcie by Terry Waite, the archbishop's special en voy who has made several trips to Lebanon in an effort to gain the release of hostages there. Jenco was to fly to Washington on Friday for a meeting with President Reagan. He said he had a separate message from his former captors for Reagan, but said no one else knew its content. "It's in my heart. It's only in my heart," he said. Jenco had an unexpected and emotional reunion today with the Rev. Benjamin Weir, a Presbyterian missionary. The two Americans, who were held hostage together in Lebanon, embraced and kissed. Weir, 61, held captive for 16 months before being released Sept. 14, flew to London for the surprise reunion with Jenco arranged by the Anglican Church. At a news conference, Jenco said his reunion with Weir was "a very deep emotional strain for me" and had left him "not that alert right now." He spoke in a low voice. Weir did not appear at the news conference. Runcie said the Anglican and Roman Catholic churches have worked closely together on behalf of hostages in Lebanon. . called "positive ideas" on peace from Israeli Prime Minister Shimon Peres, but King Hussein rejected Bush's proposal for a meeting with Peres. Bush and his wife, Barbara, were driven from the airport to Nadwa Palace for a courtesy visit to the monarch and American-bor- n Queen Noor. During his four days in Israel, the vice president praised Peres for meeting King Hassan II in Morocco last week and said he thought similar talks with Hussein were "the logical next step." Hussein responded promptly that such a meeting was possible only in the context of an international conference on Middle East peace, which the United States opposes. Bush met with Peres for nearly two hours Wednesday before flying to Jordan. U.S. and Israeli aides said much of the conversation dealt with prospects for peace. "He has some ideas that he asked me to share with the king," Bush told a news conference in Jerusalem, but he said they did not Former hostage Father Lawrence Jenco smiles as he walks with Robert Runcie, the Archbishop of Canterbury.
