Show Pig 4 - THE HERALD, Prove, Utah, wi w v- - v E It seems like not a day goes by that one doesn't read about fami- lies injured or made homeless by fires or electrical accidents. If one is careful, reading about it is as close as you'll eer come. ! Especially if you take the steps to minimize the chances of disaster striking. The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission has two pamphlets that will help uncover potential trouble spots and minimize the risk of fires and electrical accidents in the home. What You Should Know About Fire Safety (item 417N, 50) and The Home Electrical Safety Audit (item 416N, 50) will help you make your home and family less vulnerable to these dangers. For copies, send address and 50 for each booklet to the Consumer Information Center, Pept. RW, Pueblo, Colo. 81009. The home is filled with clothes, furniture, and other flammable materials, some more dangerous than others. Flammable liquids, such as gasoline, are particularly dangerous. Using gasoline to clean a bicycle chain in the basement will fill the room with extremely flammable vapors that could ignite and explode. How could they ignite? It only takes a spark from a refrigerator motor, or the flame of a pilot light. What You Should Know About Home Fire Safety describes how to handle other products, such as wood stain, which can also fill the air with Friday. September ire Safety Hints dangerous vapor. Thanks to the Federal Hazardous Substance Act, flammable liquids are labeled according to the degree of their flammability. Read the labels, do not use them indoors, and alwiys store flammable liquids outside in suitable containers. Clothes can also be fuel for an accidental fire, so keep fire safety in mind while shopping. Children s sleepwear, up to size 14, must be made of flame resistant fabric. Tight woven, smooth natural fabrics, such as denim, ignite less easily than synthetic, loose woven or fuzzy surfaced fabrics. Also, loose fitting clothing is hazardous because it could drag across a stove top and catch fire. In case clothes do catch fire, teach your family not to run, but to drop to the floor and roll to smother the flames. Faulty electrical equipment and misuse of electrical equipment are frequent causes of accidents. The Home Electrical Safety Audit has a checklist to help you troubleshoot your cords and electrical appliances. For instance, is your porta- ble electric heating equipment away from the drapes and out of walkways? Are all your small appliances unplugged when not in use? Someone could trip over a cord or a space heater, causing injury and maybe a fire. Be especially careful when using an electric blanket. Make sure there are no cracks in the wiring Clowning around is what the Rolling family enjoys doing. When Doug and Vicki Kolling of Orem were dating about lVz years ago, she asked him if she could go .to one of his parties where he did his clown act. "I told her the only way she could go was if she donned a clown .outfit too," he said. So she did and they started clowning around together. After they were married in January, her son, Kurtis, wanted to join and no scorch marks on the cloth. Follow the manufacturers directions for tucking it in or using it other than as a top covering. V If a fire does occur in the home, it is imporlant that the family have a plan for escape. It is good to have two routes planned in case one is blocked by flame. Practice ..va the act. So, about a month ago, after he turned 5, Kurtis became a clown as well. Now, the Kollings are the official clowns of the Utah County Fair and are the first clowns in 12 years to be hired to perform at the Utah State Fair. Their performance, which lasts about 30 minutes and is free, will start at 11 a.m. Saturday on the south stage at the fair, Kolling said. They had two shows Sept. 7 at the fair. "It's really a riot," he said. Kolling opens the show with S?7 X . II .f I some magic for the kids. Of comes on stage with a spoof on ballet that generally pleases the older crowd, he said. Kurtis is part of both acts, doing some magic of his own and acting as the scapegoat, Kolling said. "He really enjoys it. He's a real show- man." Mrs. Kolling has 16 years of experience in ballet and theater, mostly working with comedy, Kolling said. She is from Chico, Calif., where her mother teaches ballet . For most of us, it's awkward. It's embarrassing. And it's risky ... what if our children ask a question we can't answer? Although it is tempting to procrastinate when it comes to parentchild conversations about sexual issues, it is important to forge ahead. After all, if we don't talk to our children, where will they learn about sex? And if we don't talk to them when they're young, when will we get around to it? Will it then be too late? The plane, which was carrying copies of USA Today for Utah and western Colorado, had gone off of radar shortly before the crash. Copies of the national newspaper are printed in Fort Collins. The Larimer County Sheriff's Department said wreckage from the crash was spread over an area about 200 yards wide and that the crash ignited a small brush fire, which was extinguished by the Loveland Fire Department. A witness told the NTSB that there was an explosion after the plane hit the ground. County Awaits Appointments Appointments to four subcommittees and an executive committee to study county government efficiency are probably at least one week away, Brent Morris said Thursday. Morris, administrative assistant to Utah County Commission Chairman Gary J. Anderson, indicated there could be about 40 citizens serving on the subcommittees to be appointed by the county commissioners. Tentatively, the areas the subcommittees will look at include the following: Administrative structure. This would review the current form of government and possible alternatives. Roles and revenues. This would study the responsibilities the county is involved in: which ones the county must maintain because they are mandated by law, which ones might be trimmed out because they are not mandated by law or which ones might be added even though they are not mandated, etc. Employees. This would study such items as how to make the work environment better for employees, how to make their job descriptions more rewarding, how to increase efficiency in the work force, etc. Division of powers and regional representation: This would consider whether the county commissioners should have both the power to make policy and to enforce it or whether the county should hire an administrator. The subcommittee could also consider whether the county should elect the commissioners or from districts. at-lar- Lehi Supports POW Release By CRAIG WATTS Lehi Correspondent Accoridng to Lemmons, Utah has unaccounted for military personnel and almost 20 of those are from Utah County.
