But Utah State coach Chris Pella finds plenty of positives heading into the 1985 college grid season. "I could hardly wait to get going again," Pella said of his summer of waiting for the 1985 season. Pella said two things make him believe this season will be much more successful than last fall's campaign: a bunch of top junior college recruits and a real commitment made by those returning from last year s squad. "The kids made a strong commitment last season right after the BYU game (the final game of the year) to have the kind of year they could be proud of this season,'" he said. They were in the weight room the next day and have kept it up all summer. They've worked out very hard on their own in . . ' 4P . Along with the dedication and commitment of the old" players are 22 junior college players who will join the Aggies. And Pella said many of them w ill make an immediate, positive impact. "Most of the junior college kids were with us during spring drills and I was very excited about the contributions they made," he said. "We have exceilent e, rival BYU and has plus road games at Iowa State. Arizona State and New Mexico State. Still, Pella thinks good things must be coming. "I can't help but believe that dedication like our kids have demonstrated this year will be rewarded in one way or another. I interviewed the players before they went home this summer, and I heard a lot of "we's." There is a good team spirit," he said. transfers from Taft: Willie Clark, Craig Howard, Eugene Harrison and Tim Kindell. Many of the Aggie recruits come from aft Community College, the jaycee national champs last year. Perhaps the top Taft transfer is Alonzo Clark, a running back with great strength and speed. "We think he can be a real quality player for us." Pella said. "He has a chance to be as good a skill player as we've ever had in this area. He's the fastest back ever at Taft. He can bench 400 and has been timed in track with a 4.2 in the 40." But Clark isn't the only good running back for the Aggies. Pella said his running back group, which includes Glen Crawford and Richard Gwynn, is one of the best-evat Utah State. "We will be a passing team," Pella said, "but we will want to have the ball in the hands of our f : Pup Truck backs at least half the time." The offensive line appears to be a strength for the Aggies, with experience and size in every spot. Perhaps chief among the linemen is junior at least the biggest 305-lNavy Tuiasosopo, a guard who has played in all 22 games since he joined the team as a freshman. The receiving corps is solid, also, with three returnees (Solomon Miller, Mickey Bell and Garland Voss), two top jaycee transfers (John Moore from Taft and Kurt Zalar from Sacramento City ) and a redshirt-freshma- n (Kendal Smith). Quarterback shapes up to be a battle, with transfer Tom Ponich taking a slight lead over returnee Brad Ipsen in spring drills. "Tom maybe had a little edge coming out of spring drills. He came out of an offense (at San Diego Mesa College) that was run very similarly to ours, so he adapted well. He has good field vision," Pella said. Another QB that will be pressing for playing time is Brett Stevens, a redshirt freshman, who "has the $5795 -- 6-- 0, skill-positi- ; Richard Gwynn returns to USU. er The Truck That Won the Baja 1000 OR- $11491mo. 48 MO.
