Leading the prospects are senior running backs David Smith, Garrin Holman and Brett Harmon and senior quarterback Mark Westover. Westover was considered to be in the hunt for the starting quarterback job last season until he' broke his leg on the first day of practice. Oddly enough, Westover's injury was a long ways from the football field, resulting from getting kicked by a horse. Lynn Allred, who could be one of Payson's top athletes for the next two years, looks to be Westover's top receiver. The junior, who douon offense and bles at wide-ou- t safety on defense, started every Dave McKee, PAYSON head footHigh's second-yea- r ball coach, has tasted enough success that he knows what it takes to make a winner. But add to that list of ingredients patience and reality as McKee heads into the 1985 season as Pay-so- n will be shooting for its first winning season in almost 10 years. McKee played from 1978-8- 2 at. BYU and was a graduate assistant at Idaho State University in Poca-tell- o in 1983 when the Bengals finished second in the Big Sky Conference and qualified for the Division game last spring for Payson's playoffs. baseball team as a sophomore. With that kind of background, one would think McKee could revive Payson s grid program in one whack. And although McKee will probably be one of the first to predict success at Payson, he's tempering that enthusiasm with reality. "You have to walk before you can jog and jog before you can sprint," McKee said. Using that analogy, McKee and his coaching staff are hoping the f V Lions can start finding out what it means to sprint this season. But hitting those strides are not going to come without some hurdles such as some very tough competition in Region Eight play and the Lions' 7 record in 1984. Of the 40 upper classmen who are suited up this season, only lour are returning starters and none of those were in the Lions' offensive backfield last season. Nevertheless, McKee feels he Dave McKee has good tools on offense, despite Pay-so- n fOT according to McPayson's line carries most of the in the team s experience. Senior Jason Kee. d Last season's Tolton has the most experience, starting af both offensive and de- squad was geared more toward a n, senior-oriente- fensive tackles. Tolton is flanked by senior Tony Kelly, who's a huge 235 pounds. But McKee warns that Kelly has deceptive speed for his size. Brian Finch is another senior lineman who should see plenty of playing time. Hp is projected to be the starting center alter gaining 40 pounds and considerable strength ..,- - passing game, but McKee expects this year's team to run more often Overall, McKee is emphasizing production that's not necessarily measured in wins and losses. STRENGTHS: Coach Dave McKee has continued to establish a competitive attitude at Payson. He also considers this year's team better prepared physically. .., .. WEAKNESSES: Other than seniors Jason Tolton and Brian Finch, the Lions could be small and inexperienced on the offensive line. It could also take time for players in skill positions to gain experience.
