To accomplish that goal, the format of the broadcast has changed over the years to reflect the increasing complexity of the issues and the advanced technology of the medium. For most of its existence, Face The Nation had a traditional format. Originally there were three reporters plus a moderator; that became three reporters, including a moderator. A CBS News Correspondent and an independent reporter were selected each week on the basis of their expertise in the subject matter to be covered. The third person with a CBS News Correspondent who served permanently on the panel and acted as moderator. CBS News Correspondent George Herman served longest in the role, from 1969 to 1983. Other former moderators have included Face The Nation, CBS News' weekly Sunday interview broad- cast, celebrates its 30th sary with its November Anniver- 11th ediHouse Cor- tion. CBS News White respondent Leslye Stahl is the moderator of the weekly series presented on the CBS Television Network (4:30-5:0- 0 PM, PT) and the CBS Radio Network (9:30-10:0- 0 AM, PT). Face The Nation established itbroadself as a headline-makin- g cast when it debuted on November 7, 1954 with Senator Joseph ) as its guest, McCarthy just two days before the Senate began its debate that resulted in a vote to condemn his conduct. Since the broadcast's inception, it has played host to heads of state, labor and business leaders, elected and appointed officials, leading scientist, military figures, sports greats, educators and sociologists. When Soviet Premier Nikita Khrushchev was interviewed for the first time on any country's television, it was on Face The Nation (June 21, 1957). Krushchev's unprecedented acceptance was so surprising that when the broadcast's producer telephoned the CBS News Moscow correspondent to confirm it, the correspondent refused to believe him. The week that Fidel Castro entered Havana, he agreed to an exclusive interview on Face The Nation. The broadcast originated from Cuba (January 11, 1959). news-intervie- (R-Wi- s. Castro arrived in the studio around midnight, surrounded by a hundred supporters armed with machine guns and rifles. He told the news panel, "We are men of love." "Well,'' the panel countered, "then why so many executives without a trial?" "Not so many," said Mr. Castro. "Only two or three dozen criminals." Just three weeks after perform- ing the first successful heart transplant operation in history, Dr. Christian Barnard appeared on Face The Nation (December 24, 1967). The medical and moral implications of his historic sur- gery were deemed so important that the broadcast was expanded to an hour as two American heart Ted Soviet Premier Nikita Khrushchev appeared on Face The Nation June Kopp, ian Ambassador to the U.S., and CBS News Pentagon Correspondent David Martin. And as the Communist government in Poland began releasing political prisoners from jail this past summer, including members of Solidarity, the leader of the banned labor union, Lech Walesa, appeared on Face The Nation from his homeland to discuss the future of the movement (August completely rescheduled that morning to respond to this story, with details of the tragedy still unraveling while the broadcast was on the air. Guests included Defense Secretary Caspar Weinberger, who left a meeting of the National Security Council to appear on the broadcast from the Roosevelt Room at the White House; George Ball, former U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations; Dr. Rafic Jouejati, the Syr StuarL NovmeEauU Niven and Martin Agronsky. Lesley Stahl assumed the role of moderator September 18, 1983. A veteran CBS News Correspondent, she continues her assignment covering the White House for CBS News, as she has since 2, 1957. January surgeons, Dr. Michael DeBakey and Dr. Adrian Kantrowitz, joined Dr. Barnard to discuss the issue.
