The United States of America has not been the same since. Parks was arrested and jailed. Her act, history records, became a symbol around which waves of protests against racial segregation were set off across the nation. Mrs. Parks, a tailor's assistant at a department store and NAACP activist then, is now called the "Mother of the Modern Freedom Movement." She broke a Montgomery segregation law by not surrendering her seat when told to by the bus driver. Now 71 and a receptionist in a congressman's office in Detroit, woman will be the non-viole- nt soft-spok- presented with the Wonder Woman Foundation's "Woman of Courage" special award Wednesday (Nov. 14) in the Plaza Hotel. Fourteen other women, all over will receive 1984 one is 84 40 "Wonder Woman" awards for trying to right wrongs "people don't want to talk about," said Koryne Horbal, executive director of the foundation. Such things, she said, include sexual slavery of women, the plight of street people, ageism and other "hidden social issues." Each awardee, she said, is being honored for scaling humanitarian heights despite setbacks and other obstacles, including, on occasion, personal battles. When telling about the choice of Mrs. Parks for the special award, the Foundation said: 5b Following Tuesday's Election Day? At Hospital The dietary department of Utah Valley Regional Medical Center will host a Low Sodium Diet Class and Estimating Bodv Fat Service every Tuesday in November. The Low Sodium Diet Class will be from 11 a.m. to noon in the seventh floor classroom. Highlights will include learning "to identify foods, eating out on a low sodium diet, and cooking tips. A registered dietician will measure percentage of bodv fat anytime between 1:30 ajid3.30 p.m. in the fourth floor classroom. Participants shold wear shorts and a or a swim suit. The dietician will also make recommendations for total fitness. For more information on these public service classes, call the Education Department at Utah Valley Regional Medical Center. About events during the famous bus ride home from work nearly 30 years ago, Mrs. Parks said: "I would not stand up. The bus was packed." How did she feel about being put in jail for a few hours that evening?
