Show Monday. September!!). 1984 THE HERALD. Provo. Utah. Angela Lansbury Dives Info Weekly TV Series - AcHOLLYWOOD (UPI) knowledging that "television is no longer the questionable word it was," stage and screen actress Angela Lansbury has plunged into a weekly series on the eve of her 59th birthday. Miss Lansbury will play a dowager detective in Murder, She CBS entry Wrote, an hour-lon- g this fall. d As Jessica Fletcher, the actress plays a middle-age- d g widow who writes a mystery novel and discovers her bent for solving real life mysteries. "She travels a great deal," Miss Lansbury said in her impeccable native British accent. "She writes a new mystery every year and hits the talk show circuit. Wherever she goes there is an interesting murder near at hand. "Jessica solves murders by devious and clever means, using her womanly intuition. She is a wide-ope- easy to turn out TV shows by formula like packaged cheese. I wanted to sidestep that, and I have. "There is no violence in our episodes. Jessica finds herself in physical jeopardy but not confronted by physical combat. One never sees the murder committed, only the aftermath. There are no car chases either. much-honore- best-sellin- n, broad-minde- intelligent d, woman of the 80s, not an eccentric. "I chose this show carefully because I wanted to be associated with a quality production. It's "This is a closed-en- d mystery show. Viewers don't know who the murderer is until Jessica does. It's mystery in the good sense. A game viewers can play." Murder, She Wrote will bring to mind the misadventures of Miss Marple, Agatha Christie's marvelous female detective, a role Miss Lansbury portrayed in The Mirror Crack d several years ago. She cheerfully admits the movie may have inspired the TV series but says the only similarity that Jessica and Miss Marple pen to be middle-agemystery solvers. is hap- women d Miss Lansbury is the only actress to win four Tony Awards, Broadway's highest accolade i for Mame, Dear World, Gypsy and Sweeney Todd and captured three best supporting actress Oscar nominations. One would suspect her fame, wealth and years might forestall the arduous demands of a weekly drama series. Indeed, Miss Lansbury finds herself exhausted after completing only three episodes, working hours at day at Universal Studios five days a week. Because she is the only regular member of the cast, she finds herself in almost every scene with precious few free days. She has rented a home in Brentwood and has time only to work, eat, sleep and study her lines. "It's a monstrous work load," she said with a tired smile. "The hardest work I've ever done, including long touring companies in musical productions. Both demand discipline, energy and a sense of never letting go. "When I said I wanted to do this series people asked if I were crazy. I didn't know what they were talking about. Now I do. "As the saying goes, you've got to be in it to win it. And I want to win it." 12-1- 4 S- - f - ft We 9 v 4 n Movie Tells Gypsy's Story - MOVIE: 'Fighting Coast Guard' O World War a Coast Guard commander is joined by top Washington journalists analyzing the week s news.
